Pray Your Presence to God

Pray Your Presence to God

It starts with a simple prayer from Abraham, who said “Here I am” to God.
by Bob Hostetler

It is one of the most frequent prayers—perhaps the most common—in the Bible.

Yet it may be a prayer you have never prayed, or even heard. But it is a good one—a useful one—nonetheless.

Abraham prayed that simple prayer. Genesis 22:1 (NIV) records, “Some time later God tested Abraham. He said to him, ‘Abraham!’ ‘Here I am,’ he replied.”

Later in that same chapter (but days later in the sequence of events), at a decisive moment on Mount Moriah, Genesis 22:11 (NIV) relates, “But the angel of the Lord called out to him from heaven, ‘Abraham! Abraham!’ ‘Here I am,’ he replied.”

Many years later, Abraham’s grandson, Jacob (also called Israel), had a similar exchange with God. Genesis 46:2 (NIV) says, “And God spoke to Israel in a vision at night and said, ‘Jacob! Jacob!’ ‘Here I am,’ he replied.”

When God spoke to Moses from the burning bush, Moses answered, “Here I am” (Exodus 3:4, NIV). When the Lord called Samuel, though Samuel didn’t even recognize it as the voice of God at first, he answered, “Here I am” (1 Samuel 3:4, NIV). The psalmist David voiced a musical prayer: “Here I am, I have come— it is written about me in the scroll” (Psalm 40:7, NIV). And when Isaiah the prophet heard God asking, “Whom should I send as a messenger to this people? Who will go for us?” he answered, “Here I am. Send me” (Isaiah 6:8, NLT).

You don’t have to audibly hear the voice of God to pray, “Here I am.” It can be a simple prayer of presence. You might say it upon waking up: “Here I am.” You may pray the words when you enter a church service or your personal time of prayer and meditation: “Here I am.” Try it as you set out for a walk: “Here I am.” You may pray it when you are preparing for a journey or a task to which you believe God is calling you. You can even pray your presence when you have no other words, whether because your soul is at rest or because you are in turmoil: “Here I am.”

It also works as a prayer of surrender: “Here I am.” However and whenever you pray that simple prayer, you are in the company of patriarchs, prophets and poets who showed up and let God use them. More importantly, of course, it is a reminder that you are in the presence of God, and you are consciously present for Him.

What Is the Spiritual Meaning of the Cardinal?

What Is the Spiritual Meaning of the Cardinal?

The cardinal holds special spiritual meaning for Christians as they symbolize everlasting vitality (the faith in the blood of Christ as the birds are red in color), Christmas (the birth of Christ) and are also considered a creative force (the red color equals vitality and creativity). The word cardinal comes from the Latin word cardo, which means hinge, so something that has cardinal qualities is of the utmost importance and other things hinge around it.

A cardinal is a representative of a loved one who has passed. When you see a red bird, it means your loved one is visiting you. A cardinal often shows up when you need or miss your beloved most. Red birds also make an appearance during times of celebration as well as despair to let you know your dear one will always be with you. Look for cardinals and they'll appear.

The Cherokee believe that the cardinal is an omen and is the daughter of the earthly sun. If a person sees a cardinal flying downward then it is bad luck, but if a person sees a cardinal flying upward towards her father, the sun, then it is good luck.

The cardinal was recognized in 1926 as the state bird of Kentucky. It was the first bird to gain state recognition. It is now the state bird of six other states including Ohio, Virginia, West Virginia, Indiana, North Carolina and Illinois. It is the most popular state bird and is also the name of the St. Louis professional baseball team as well as the name of the Arizona professional football team. There are also several university athletic teams that have the cardinal as a mascot, including the Louisville Cardinals and the Ball State Cardinals.

Decluttering as Part of Your Lenten Spiritual Practice

Decluttering as Part of Your Lenten Spiritual Practice

The Lenten season isn’t just about giving up food and drink. It can also be a time for decluttering your mind and heart.
by Guideposts Digital Editors

The English word “lent” comes from a Dutch word referring to the season of spring. It’s the 40 days (not including Sundays) between Ash Wednesday and Easter, traditionally associated with giving up food or, in more recent years, social media.

Some denominations refrain from meat on Fridays, while other people give up one food category, perhaps sugar or coffee, for the full 40 days.

But the “Great Fast,” as referred to by some church traditions, can also be a time to do a spiritual reset by decluttering and re-focusing on what really matters.

The purpose of Lent is to give up the things keeping you back from God. Decluttering can be a way to release physical and spiritual clutter and focus on developing your relationship with God.

Like any fast, this is a two-step process. It’s not only about giving something up, but connecting with a higher power. Here are three strategies to incorporate decluttering into your Lenten season:

1.Toss out one item every day for 40 days
Start small by committing to get rid of one item a day for the next 40 days. To help yourself remember, set a daily alarm—perhaps for first thing in the morning, during your normal prayer time or during an evening loll. It may feel small, but by Easter you’ll have removed 40 unnecessary items from your life.

2. 40 bags in 40 days
In 2011, Ann Marie Heasley, who blogs at White House Black Shutters pledged to l declutter during Lent—she called it the 40 Bags in 40 Days Decluttering Challenge. The challenge is simple: fill one bag with items to discard every day during Lent.

3. Clean out one area every day
Another way to approach decluttering is to make a list of areas in your home, office or life you want to declutter and then work on one space a day. These could be as small as a junk drawer or bathroom cabinet. If you declutter one small space every day, you’ll have made major progress at the end of 40 days.

Once you’ve decided how you want to declutter, it’s even more important to remember what Lent is truly about: connecting with God. Here are a few ways to keep your focus on God as you declutter:

1. Use cleaning time to pray
It might sound obvious, but the purpose of decluttering isn’t just to make more physical space—it’s to make spiritual room for God. Try practice this by praying as you clean, fill bags or tidy up spaces.

2. Don’t forget the non-tangibles
Just because you have a clean house doesn’t mean there aren’t spaces in your life that need a fresh look. Perhaps you’ve been feeling disconnected from God and need to take a hard look at your social calendar and find ways to free time. Or maybe you feel debt is holding you back and want to make a plan for decluttering your finances. Decluttering isn’t only tied to physical belongings. Use this season of penitence to re-assess your mental and spiritual health as well.

3. Set aside time for God
No matter what you decide to do for Lent—even if you do nothing at all—you can dedicate yourself to prayer and quiet time this season. Commit to a daily devotional or prayer practice, like Guideposts 40 Days of Prayer Program. Click here to sign up for the Lent prayer program.

Tips for a More Meaningful Lent

Introduction

"For God, who said, “Let light shine out of darkness,” made His light shine in our hearts to give us the light of the knowledge of God’s glory displayed in the face of Christ." -2 Corinthians 4:6 NIV

Lent is often thought of as a time to give up something, but it’s actually a meaningful time to gain a closer relationship with God. In the coming days, you have the magnificent opportunity to deepen your faith and reflect on the life and message Jesus shared with the world.

During this beautiful time of renewal, focus on your faith and God’s amazing ability to bring good out of bad. In just three days, the pain and sorrow of Good Friday became the joy and glory of Easter. Begin with this prayer:

Dear Lord, As I begin my journey toward spiritual growth, Help me to look deep within myself, Let go of the old, And embrace the new life That comes from You.

Let Go and Let God

“Remember not the former things, nor consider the things of old. Behold, I am doing a new thing; now it springs forth, do you not perceive it? I will make a way in the wilderness and rivers in the desert.” -Isaiah 43:18-19 ESV

During this Season of Lent, ask God to help you leave behind barriers that block you from having a closer relationship with Him and look to the future. Let go of what is impeding you from living your best full life and go forward on the path He clears for you.

Heavenly Father, release me of thoughts and things that get in the way our relationship.

Deepen Your Prayer Life

“But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.” -Matthew 6:33 NIV

Set aside a few minutes every day to think about God. Do not say anything during this time; just focus your mind on Him. This practice will make your mind spiritually receptive and will help deepen your prayer life.

Heavenly Father, I commit my soul to Your care. Knowing You are watching over my life gives me peace of mind.

Draw from God’s Wisdom

“You guide me with your counsel, and afterward you will take me into glory.” -Psalm 73:24 NIV

Know that God is working on your behalf. Put every problem in His hands. Ask Him to give you the right answer. Believe that He is doing just that, and take the guidance as it comes.

Father, help me find solutions to my problems. Guide me to apply Your wisdom to my life.

Begin Each Day with Devotion

“This is the day the LORD has made. We will rejoice and be glad in it.” -Psalm 118:24 NLT

When you arise, say the above verse out loud three times—only personalize it and say, “I will rejoice and be glad in it.” Repeat it in a strong, clear voice and believe it!

Heavenly Father, today is going to be a wonderful day! With Your help, I can successfully handle all problems that come my way.

Master Your Doubts

“Casting down arguments and every high thing that exalts itself against the knowledge of God, bringing every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ.” -2 Corinthians 10:5 NKJV

As you travel ahead on your spiritual journey, doubt can confuse or distract you. View yourself as the absolute master of your doubts. Refuse to listen to unhealthy thoughts and focus on God’s Word.

Heavenly Father, I sometimes doubt my faith or feel that I am not worthy of Your love. Help me to shed my insecurities, let go of my excuses and truly invite You to be Lord of my life.

Practice Prayer Fellowship

“For where two or three gather in my name, there am I with them.” -Matthew 18:20 NIV

Lift your spirit with prayer fellowship. Take the time to think, talk and pray with people who are seeking a deeper relationship with Jesus Christ. You will be aware that Jesus is in the midst of your group and your heart will be uplifted and encouraged.

Lord, bless You for the gift of praying with others. My prayer life is so much better when shared with those in fellowship with You.

Don’t Compare Yourself to Others

“Each one should test their own actions. Then they can take pride in themselves alone, without comparing themselves to someone else.” -Galatians 6:4 NIV

Comparison to others is destructive, you’ll either feel discouraged, or become arrogant. As Theodore Roosevelt said, “Comparison is the thief of joy.” Instead of looking to others, focus on your purpose and be the person God made you to be.

Dear Lord, help me find satisfaction by doing my best and avoid the trap of comparing myself to others.

Build Up God’s Love

“Yet in all these things we are more than conquerors through Him who loved us.” -Romans 8:37 NKJV

Build up your spirit, day by day, with the power of God’s presence in your life and His eternal love for you. No matter what happens, nothing can separate you from His love and protection.

Lord God, I will dwell on this verse until it becomes an unshakeable truth in my life.

Be Complete

“The kingdom of God is within you.” -Luke 17:21 KJV

God has placed all the abilities you need in your spirit. Believe in yourself and the strength within you will surface. When you feel overwhelmed and weak, repeat these words, “God’s abundance and power are within me. I lack for nothing.”

Lord Jesus, may I abide in the peace of Your kingdom now and forever.

Live by Jesus’ Example

“Then Jesus told his disciples, “If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me.” -Matthew 16:24 NIV

If you want to be a better person, follow Christ’s lead. Be kind and loving to friends and foes alike, forgive those who have hurt you, be of service to others—help the poor, volunteer at a charity—do good deeds humbly and quietly.

Dear Lord, I am ready to serve. Guide me to where I am needed.

Lent: A Time to Recharge, Renew and Draw Closer to Go

Lent: A Time to Recharge, Renew and Draw Closer to God

Sometimes it’s easy to get caught up in the day-to-day routine of life and forget how blessed you truly are.
by Sabra Ciancanelli

All are from the dust, and to dust all return.  —Ecclesiastes 3:20 (ESV)

This morning my husband and I drove through our old town, past our old house that I’d loved and nurtured for almost a decade. We inched forward slowly, but not slowly enough, to catch up to all the memories.

Then we passed the local grocery store, where I shopped every day for years. I loved the man who worked there stocking shelves. Brian always greeted me with a heartfelt “Hello there!” as if he hadn’t seen me in months. I learned from a friend he’d had a car accident in high school. He spent a long time in a coma and was lucky to be alive. And though he’d made a miraculous recovery, he never fully regained all of his abilities.

Once I had an awful day at work. I was exhausted and starving as I snaked through the aisles, picking up something for dinner. When I reached for a jar of spaghetti sauce, I lost my grip and it shattered on the shiny linoleum floor. Looking at the mess, I broke down and cried.

Brian ran over. “It’s okay. Accidents happen.”

I noticed his forehead had a smudge of something as he got a mop. “Rough day,” I sighed.

“Ash Wednesday,” he said. I had totally forgotten. Brian went on. “Beginning of Lent. Forty days to get ready. Jesus saved me, you know. He saves me every day.” As he mopped up the broken jar, I took his words to heart.

Dear Lord, it’s easy to get caught up in the day-to-day of my life and forget what a blessing it truly is. Help me to use this special time to recharge and renew and draw closer to You.

What to Give Up for Lent

What to Give Up for Lent

How about giving up busyness and worry and spending some time alone with God?
by Rick Hamlin

Lent’s not so far away, coming up on March 6, and I can hear someone ask me with all the kindest intentions, “What are you going to give up this year?” I understand what’s behind that question, but instead of answering it straight out, let me ask back, “Why give up anything?”

What are we commemorating at Lent anyway?

Traditionally, Lent is the penitential season in the Christian calendar that begins on Ash Wednesday and ends on Easter. It is 40 days long, not including the Sundays, and people often dedicate the time leading up to Easter to some practice of renunciation or fasting. Sundays aren’t included because Sundays are considered feast days, mini-celebrations of the Resurrection of Easter.

Why 40 days? Forty is one of those magical Biblical numbers, like the 40 days and 40 nights it rained during the flood or the 40 years the Israelites wandered in the desert before they reached the Promised Land. Forty is a number associated with a time of trial.

Specifically, Lent commemorates the 40 days and 40 nights that Jesus spent in the wilderness, fasting, after he was baptized by John and before he began his ministry. It was his own time of trial, after which he was tempted by the devil.

Okay, you can see how the tradition began of fasting during this period–skipping a meal a day or giving up sweets and chocolates or not eating cheese, as my son did one year. But what about that other part of the narrative–wandering in the wilderness, away from people, demands, the usual routine?

Let me suggest this as Lenten practice: Give yourself some desert time. What little habit can you try that will take you out of the routine? How can you be, somehow, alone with God?

I know someone who gives up worry at Lent. Quite frankly, that would be harder for me than giving up ice cream and chocolates. It’s hard for her too, but what a wonderful spiritual practice. To give worry a rest, she needs to give her worries over to God, again and again.

What about a prayer practice that will give you some desert time? For an extrovert like me who loves being around people, the practice of praying by myself, away from the busyness of my days, is a wilderness zone.

No, I’ve never been asked by Satan, like Jesus was, to turn stones into bread or be told to jump off a pinnacle without any bungy cord or to be given the chance to rule the world. But a desert time, for me, is a chance to remind myself, like Jesus, just whom I trust, who my God is.

So next time someone asks you what you’re doing for Lent…tell them that you’re going to give yourself a little bit of wilderness time. Let them guess just how you’re going to do that. We all have our just deserts.

One Solitary Life

One Solitary Life
(the original 1926 version by Dr. James Allan Francis)

Let us turn now to the story. A child is born in an obscure village. He is brought up in another obscure village. He works in a carpenter shop until he is thirty, and then for three brief years is an itinerant preacher, proclaiming a message and living a life. He never writes a book. He never holds an office. He never raises an army. He never has a family of his own. He never owns a home. He never goes to college. He never travels two hundred miles from the place where he was born. He gathers a little group of friends about him and teaches them his way of life. While still a young man, the tide of popular feeling turns against him. One denies him; another betrays him. He is turned over to his enemies. He goes through the mockery of a trial; he is nailed to a cross between two thieves, and when dead is laid in a borrowed grave by the kindness of a friend.

Those are the facts of his human life. He rises from the dead. Today we look back across nineteen hundred years and ask, What kind of trail has he left across the centuries? When we try to sum up his influence, all the armies that ever marched, all the parliaments that ever sat, all the kings that ever reigned are absolutely picayune in their influence on mankind compared with that of this one solitary life…
