“God! My God! It’s You–I search for You! My whole being thirsts for You! My body desires You in a dry and tired land, no water anywhere.” Psalm 63:1

Do you make God your first priority regardless of your busy schedule or daily crises? When King David was under extreme pressure, he did not request help for his problems but only sought God’s presence. Don’t let stress take over your life, put your faith and focus on God.

Ask God to help you remember Him before all other needs.

An Easter Monday Devotion

An Easter Monday Devotion

Stray Easter grass reminds the author that Easter isn't a day. It's a promise to keep in your heart all year long.
by John Sherrill

“I am with you always…”Matthew 28:20

It’s Monday, the day after Easter.  Yesterday, when the children and grandchildren left, Tib and I went through the usual post-holiday letdown. We coped with it as we always do–cleaning up. I collected left-behind jelly beans before they could be trod into the rug, picked up a ball of colored foil where someone had missed a wastebasket, found a half-eaten chocolate rabbit under one of the kids’ beds.

Tib gathered the wicker baskets and carried them up to the attic, then got out the vacuum cleaner and attacked the escaped Easter grass.  How did the shiny green strands get so far from the bedrooms where we had unpacked the baskets?

I plucked a couple from the back of the sofa in the living room, found one on my sweater sleeve, even extracted one from the butter dish. But Tib and I didn’t give up; we searched and swept until eventually we had picked up the very last one. And then last night, as I started upstairs to bed, a green sliver winked at me from the riser.

It’s been the same this morning. I’ve found three strands already in places where I’d already looked. I was getting exasperated with the stuff until I thought, Wait! Aren’t these the little tokens I used all last week to assure me that–whatever the grief or frustration or disappointment–Easter will come?

Maybe I should change my attitude about these elusive strips of grass mysteriously popping up at unexpected times and places. Last week, I chose these spots as forecasts of the Easter message. Suppose I let the grass choose for me now. Suppose in the future, each time I catch sight of a piece of it, I let it remind me that Easter is not a day. It’s a promise.

Risen Lord, keep the glory of Your Resurrection before me all the year through.

9 After this manner therefore pray ye: Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name.
10 Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven.
11 Give us this day our daily bread.
12 And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors.
13 And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil: For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever. Amen.

Luke 11:2-4 - King James Version (KJV)

2 And he said unto them, When ye pray, say, Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done, as in heaven, so in earth.
3 Give us day by day our daily bread.
4 And forgive us our sins; for we also forgive every one that is indebted to us. And lead us not into temptation; but deliver us from evil.

Father in Heaven, bless and guide my prayer journey. Draw me close to Your Word and open my heart and mind to Your love and wisdom. Help me become a beacon of Your grace.

The Legend of the Dogwood

The Legend of the Dogwood

In Jesus’ day, so the legend goes, dogwood trees grew as large and stately as oaks, and they were covered with beautiful blossoms in white or pink. It was a dogwood tree that was chosen for Jesus’ cross. Despite His own agony, Jesus recognized the pain the tree felt, for it never wanted to be used for so horrific a purpose. Certainly not for such a Holy One!

So Christ made a promise to the dogwood tree:

"Never again shall one grow large enough to be used for a cross. Instead of tall and sturdy, they shall be slender and twisted. Dogwood trees will still have their beautiful blossoms, but from this day forward, those blossoms will have four petals that form a cross. At the tip of each petal, for all to see, will be a jagged wound stained with blood. And the center of each blossom will wear a thorny crown. And from that day to the end of time, all who see a dogwood tree in bloom will remember Me."

Where Is The Goodness of God on Good Friday?

Where Is The Goodness of God on Good Friday?

Finding messages of hope and redemption as death on the cross is ultimately defied.
by Pablo Diaz

Sitting through a Good Friday Service and listening to the excruciating story of the crucifixion is difficult. The story of the cross is packed with drama, betrayal, injustice, pain and suffering. But if we look closely, we can still uncover the goodness of God.

Scripture teaches us that Jesus gave up His life long before anyone took it. Love was the motivating factor—nothing less or more. He said, “…no one takes it away from Me, but I lay it down on My own accord.” Our salvation is more important to Him than His own life; that is the goodness of God.

In this story, we also see the goodness of God in his choice to become human for us. Because of this choice, He can identify with our pain and suffering. When we turn to God with our own afflictions, our compassionate Lord understands our plight because of what He underwent on the cross. As we draw closer to the cross, we discover that the healing of our own hurts is linked to His wounds.

In the story of the cross, we also discover the message of hope. When one of the two men who hung next to Jesus comes to terms with his own guilt,  he asks that Jesus remember him when He comes into His kingdom. Jesus offers these redeeming words, “Today you will be with Me in paradise.” This is the goodness of God in action. When we are spiritually at our lowest, we have a merciful and graceful God who wipes away all our sins, faults and mistakes to make us whole.

Lastly, the goodness of God is revealed when death does not constrain Him—He rises on the third day. There is no revitalization without Good Friday. Just like in our lives, there is no victory without struggle, no salvation without sacrifice and no resurrection without the cross. Let us bear witness to the goodness of God on Good Friday and every day.

A Devotion for Holy Week

A Devotion for Holy Week

The hope of Easter brightens the darkness of Good Friday.
by Erin Keeley Marshall

When Jesus had cried out again in a loud voice, he gave up his spirit. At that moment the curtain of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom. The earth shook, the rocks split and the tombs broke open. The bodies of many holy people who had died were raised to life. Matthew 27:50–52 (NIV)

How come this detail doesn't get more notice? Many people came back to life on the day Jesus died. That’s a big deal! In all the Easter weeks I’ve spent in church, never once do I remember a single mention of the life that began at the moment of Jesus’s death.

Each year when Good Friday arrives, the sky seems to hang lower, the atmosphere subdued by the weight of the universe and eternity and loss. We can’t wait for Easter, when we can give a standing ovation for Jesus’s victory. The hope of Easter brightens the darkness of Good Friday.

I’ve always thought Jesus’s Father God waited until Easter to clarify His victory, but He did not! He began bringing His people back to life immediately. Eternal rebirth for humanity began immediately after Jesus paid the price for us.

Jesus won, a truth that unequivocally means life. Eternal life in all its healing, saving glory began on Good Friday.

Whatever the day looks like from your perspective, whatever season of happiness or sorrow you are in today, celebrate His gift of your life as you thank Jesus for dying to buy you back from death.

Spend a few minutes imagining the scene in Heaven’s throne room after Jesus died as faithful followers were reborn. Thank Him for life.

A Devotional for Monday of Holy Week

A Devotional for Monday of Holy Week: The Cleansing

A Lenten perspective on  Jesus clearing out the Temple.
by Elizabeth Sherrill

And Jesus…drove out all who sold and bought in the temple, and he overturned the tables of the money-changers and the seats of those who sold pigeons.—Matthew 21:12

It was an unheard-of scandal! This young rabbi who yesterday had the whole city in a patriotic uproar, today stormed into the very temple precinct itself and created chaos. Doves flapping, men shouting, women scrabbling after the rolling coins. This fellow from Galilee, once again stirring up trouble!

But stirring-up is always what happens when Jesus enters the scene. Monday of Holy Week has its parallel in our individual journey of faith. He comes, and priorities are overturned, assumptions swept aside. The first thing He did on entering Jerusalem is the first thing He does on entering a life: He goes straight to the temple, to the place where we worship, and cleans out whatever is not part of God’s design.

The process is called by many names: sanctification, amendment of life, getting right with God, but the meaning is the same. The recognition that with Jesus in charge, many things we used to do, say, want, are no longer okay. It’s such a common pattern that we’ve come to expect it.

And then there’s the danger in the Monday experience. We think we know what things He wants to get rid of. When my mother was growing up, the list included wearing makeup, reading novels and riding a bicycle on Sunday. Each group, each era, has its own expectations.

But the hallmark of that Monday in Jerusalem was surprise. Jesus knew what stood between people in those days and God. “Astonished” is how Mark describes people’s reactions to that original cleansing, and astonished is how we feel when God’s housecleaning, not the one we envisaged, gets underway within us. Prejudice. Old hurts. A sense of inferiority. Whatever blocks our relationships with Him, out it must go.

“What are you doing!” we cry when the Cleanser strides in.

“I’m making myself a temple,” He replies.

Six Holy Week Prayers

Six Holy Week Prayers

How can we, in the midst of our busy lives, make “Holy Week” a little more holy?
by Bob Hostetler

Everyone knows that the Sunday before Easter is called “Palm Sunday,” right? And the Friday before Easter is “Good Friday.” Some even know that Thursday is called “Maundy Thursday” (“Maundy,” derived from the Latin word for "command," refers to Jesus' commandment to the disciples to "Love one another as I have loved you").

But many of us, even if we know such things, are more or less at a loss to know how to meaningfully mark such important days in the Christian year. How can we, in the midst of our busy lives, make “Holy Week” a little more holy? Is it even possible?

I think it is. I think the best way to do that is with prayer. So here are six Holy Week prayers, specific to each day, followed by a suggestion for further prayer and meditation:

Holy Tuesday
Lord Jesus, it was on a Tuesday that you spoke out against abuse of power, collaboration with oppressors, misuse of authority. So today we pray, comforter of the abused, strengthen those burdened by corrupted rule or injustice; rescue the overwhelmed; be present to those who call on your name, to those we name on our lips, and in the silence of our hearts, those whose concerns are known only to you. Amen.

Holy Wednesday
Lord Jesus, it was on this day that Judas Iscariot conspired to betray you. Remembering that, I pray the prayer of Augustine: “Lord Jesus, don't let me lie when I say that I love you...and protect me today, for I could betray you.” Amen.

Maundy Thursday
Lord Jesus, I pray today with Peter, who recoiled when you stooped to wash his feet: “Lord, wash, not my feet only, but also my hands and my head.” And my heart. And my mind. And my life. Amen (based on John 13:9).

Good Friday
Am I a stone, and not a sheep,
That I can stand, O Christ, beneath Thy cross,
To number drop by drop Thy blood's slow loss,
And yet not weep?

Not so those women loved
Who with exceeding grief lamented Thee;
Not so fallen Peter weeping bitterly;
Not so the thief was moved;

Not so the Sun and Moon
Which hid their faces in a starless sky,
A horror of great darkness at broad noon--
I, only I.

Yet give not o'er,
But seek Thy sheep, true Shepherd of the flock;
Greater than Moses, turn and look once more
And smite a rock.
(by Christina Rosetti, public domain)

Silent Saturday
Lord Jesus, Jesus, I await you. Be risen anew in my heart as the light of Easter dawns tomorrow. Amen.

Easter
It is only right, with all the powers of our heart and mind, to praise You, Father, and Your Only-begotten Son, Our Lord Jesus Christ: Dear Father, by Your wondrous condescension of loving-kindness toward us, Your servants, You gave up Your Son. Dear Jesus, You paid the debt of Adam for us to the Eternal Father by Your Blood poured forth in loving-kindness. You cleared away the darkness of sin by Your magnificent and radiant Resurrection. You broke the bonds of death and rose from the grave as a Conqueror. You reconciled heaven and earth. Our life had no hope of eternal happiness before You redeemed us. Your Resurrection has washed away our sins, restored our innocence and brought us joy. How inestimable is the tenderness of Your love!
(Saint Gregory the Great's Easter Prayer)

You may want to pray these to begin each day in this Holy Week. Or you may pray each prayer several times a day. However you utilize these prayers, I hope they will enrich your walk with God and make this Holy Week truly—well, holy.

Palm Sunday: Faith on Parade

Palm Sunday: Faith on Parade

What looks foolish to the world can be God’s wisdom at work.
by Rick Hamlin

“Does your church march around outside on Palm Sunday?” a friend emailed me. I considered for a moment lying and telling him, “No, we don’t. Not at our church.” I was afraid if I said yes he wouldn’t come.

I understood his hesitation. It sounds pretty embarrassing, doesn’t it? Being part of church congregation and marching outside, carrying palms, worshipping on a busy New York City block. What if someone was looking? What if someone he knew saw him?

I don’t expect we make a pretty picture. It’s always a big congregation on Palm Sunday and getting everybody organized to march outside and go down the block is unwieldy.

We try to sing while we process, making our loud “Hosannas,” and the front part of the procession usually gets ahead of the back part of the procession so we don’t even end up singing together. We’re just a disjoint group of people staring at programs and hymnals, stuck at a traffic signal.

And yet, I’m always struck by the wonder of it. What a chance to take our faith outside and put it on parade. What an occasion of witness.

Maybe someone will look up from their Sunday Times, glance out the window and think, “Those people must really believe in what they’re doing or they wouldn’t risk looking so foolish.”

Paul made the point in his letter to the Corinthians that what looks foolish to the world can be God’s wisdom at work, “because the foolishness of God is wiser than human wisdom.”

Maybe foolishness itself is important to experience on Palm Sunday. Think of how self-conscious the disciples must have felt when they were walking along behind Jesus on the colt with the people shouting, “Hosanna to the Son of David. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.”

Didn’t they worry about being noticed? Weren’t the apostles wary of what this hosanna-singing crowd really thought? After all, in less than a week, some of these same people waving their palm branches would be urging the authorities to crucify Jesus.

The phrase that comes to mind for this little Palm Sunday parade is “ritual humiliation.” The events of Holy Week, after all, led to a tremendous, monstrous humiliation. When we celebrate Holy Week we walk through what Jesus’ followers felt–their bewilderment, their despair, their fear and their faltering faith.

Don’t I feel all those things when I contemplate Jesus’ suffering?

Palm Sunday is a mixed celebration, a parade that ends in a minor key. Sorrow hovers close by. We start out singing hymns of praise and then we end contemplating the Crucifixion.

“Yes, we walk outside on Palm Sunday,” I wrote back to my friend. “It’s a little embarrassing and I’m sure we look foolish, but it’s a good foolishness. It’s a way to welcome what is coming, a getting ready for Easter, which has always looked like foolishness to the world. Come to church with us. I’ll give you a palm frond of your own to carry.”

I hope he comes this year.

The legend tells us that the donkey that carried Jesus into Jerusalem on Palm Sunday also followed him to Calvary, for the donkey loved the Lord. Appalled by the sight of Jesus on the cross, the donkey turned away but could not leave. The shadow of the cross fell upon his shoulders and back, forever marking him and all of his descendants.

Praying Through the Holy Week: An Easter Prayer Guide

Praying Through the Holy Week: An Easter Prayer Guide

Easter is here again.

We reveal to ourselves and others what is important to us by the way we celebrate. Is the season before Easter mainly a hassle to get to the mall and a strain on our budget, as we purchase clothes, candy, cards, and groceries for a big dinner? Or is it several days or weeks of considering God’s work in our lives through Jesus, along with special activities to help us think about Jesus’ death and resurrection?

Over the course of the Lenten and Easter season, we are remembering the lowest points of sin and the highest peaks of what God has done for us through Jesus. We have a way, the only way, to the Father through Jesus. That’s worth celebrating!

And yet every year it’s so easy for Easter to slip up on us, and suddenly we’re saying, “Oh, my goodness, it’s Palm Sunday already!”

If that’s the case for you, here are a few ways you can begin today to prepare your heart for Easter.

Prepare Your Heart

1. Read the Easter story.
Don’t wait until Easter Sunday to get reacquainted with the good news of Jesus Christ. Each of the four gospels tells the story a little differently. Here’s where you can find the Easter story in each gospel:

Matthew 26–28 --- Mark 14–16 --- Luke 22–24 --- John 18–20

2. Listen to worship music.
Whatever your listening preference is these days, crank up the Easter music.

3. Read books that will deepen your spiritual life and your understanding of what God has done.
Ideas might include missionary biographies or The Pleasures of God (John Piper), in particular the chapter entitled “God’s Pleasure in Bruising His Son.” You could use The Man Born to Be King (Dorothy L. Sayers), a radio play, for an evening of reading aloud with friends.

4. Find a quiet place to reflect.
Set aside a special place for your family’s devotional times.

5. Attend your church’s services during this season.
Prepare yourself and your children for the focus and mood of each service.

6. Pray the following prayers each day of Holy Week.

Palm Sunday

Lord God,

I give you thanks, for you are good, and your mercy is endless. Here I stand, at the start of this holy week, this week in which your church remembers Jesus’ passion and death, and I am distracted by many things. Turn my eyes now to the one who comes in your name, the one who opens the gates of righteousness, the one who answers when we call.

I bless you, Lord, for shining your light upon me, and for sending your son to us, in human frailty, to walk the road we walk. Open my eyes that I may see him coming, may praise him with a pure heart, may walk in the way of his suffering, and share also in his resurrection.

Through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever.

Amen.

Bible Verses for Reflection
Matthew 21:1–11 --- Psalm 118:1–2 --- Psalm 118:19–29

Monday

Lord God,

Six days before his death, your son sat with Lazarus, whom he had raised from the dead, and ate dinner with his friends. Once again, your gospel tells us, Martha served and Mary knelt at Jesus’ feet to anoint them with costly perfume. The disciple who was about to betray him said that it was a waste. He didn’t care about the poor, really—he just wanted to fill his own pockets And make Mary feel ashamed.

Lord God, often we cannot discern what is best: When to pour out costly perfume for your sake, even if the world thinks it a waste. When to be busy serving, or when to rest at your son’s feet and learn. Give us ears to hear you and eyes to see.

For the sake of your son, Jesus Christ.

Amen.

Bible Verses for Reflection
Matthew 21:10–17 --- John 12:1–8

Tuesday

Lord God,

The message of the cross is difficult to take. How can death give way to life? How can weakness be strength? Yet your word says that Jesus, being God, took on human flesh and suffered the worst kind of death. How can this be?

This message is indeed difficult to take. But your foolishness is wiser than our wisdom. Your weakness is greater than our strength. Help us to know that none of us can boast before you. It is only in Christ Jesus that we can boast.

In his name, we ask you to help our unbelief, that we may love you, and walk in the way Jesus taught us.

Amen.

Bible Verses for Reflection
Matthew 26:36–46 --- Hebrews 5:7–9

Wednesday

Lord God,

We tremble to think that it was one of Jesus’ own friends who betrayed him. One who sat by him, who broke bread with him. Give us strength, we pray, to walk faithfully with Jesus, even when the road we walk is rocky, even when the message of the cross seems like foolishness, and even when we feel betrayed.

You, Lord, are always faithful. We stumble. We become lost. But you are steady and sure. Give us the grace to endure our troubles, and reveal to us the glory of your kingdom.

Through your son, Jesus Christ, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit.

Amen.

Bible Verses for Reflection
Matthew 26:27-56 --- 1 Corinthians 1:18

Maundy Thursday

Lord God,

You sent your son into the world and before his hour had come he washed his disciples’ feet. You had given all things into his hands. He had come from you and was going to you, and what did he do? He knelt down on the floor and washed his friends’ feet. He was their teacher and their Lord, yet he washed their feet.

Lord God, help us learn from his example. Help us to do as he has done for us. The world will know we are his disciples if we love one another. Strengthen our hands and our wills for love and for service. Keep before our eyes the image of your son, who, being God, became a servant for our sake.

All glory be to him who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.

Amen.

Bible Verses for Reflection
John 13:1–17 --- John 13:34–35

Good Friday

Lord God,

Jesus cried out to you on the cross, “Why have you forsaken me?” You seemed so far from his cry and from his distress. Those who stood at the foot of the cross wondered where you were as they saw Jesus mocked and shamed and killed. Where were you then?

Lord God, we, too, ask where you are when there is trouble and suffering and death and we cry out to you for help. Be near to us and save us so that we may praise you for your deliverance.

Lord God, we wait on Friday for the resurrection of Sunday. Sometimes our lives seem a succession of Fridays and we cannot see what is “Good”. Teach us to call your name as Jesus did. Make us to trust in you like little children.

In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Bible Verses for Reflection
John 18–19 --- Isaiah 52:13–15 --- Isaiah 53 --- Hebrews 10:16–25 --- Psalm 22

Holy Saturday

Lord God,

On the Sabbath, Jesus rested. He was in the grave. He had finished his work. To most people’s eyes it looked as if it were all over. He was dead and buried. But only as a seed dies when it is planted in the earth. Not to decay, but to spring to new life.

Teach us to take refuge in you when we are afraid. Teach us that death is not our end. Teach us to hope always in you and in the resurrection, the making of all things new.

Through Jesus Christ our Lord,

Amen.

Matthew 17:1–6 --- Lamentations 3:1–9 --- Lamentations 3:19–24

Resurrection Sunday

Lord God,

You loved this world so much that you gave your one and only son that we might be called your children too. Lord, help us to live in the gladness and grace of Easter Sunday every day. Let us have hearts of thankfulness for your sacrifice. Let us have eyes that look upon your grace and rejoice in our salvation. Help us to walk in that mighty grace and tell your good news to the world.

All for your glory do we pray, Lord,

Amen.

Birds of the Bible

Birds of the Bible

These harbingers of spring also play an important role in Scripture.
by Rick Hamlin

The birds are making a racket in my neighborhood, true harbingers of spring. It made me think of all the birds that appear in the Bible. Here are just a few examples:

“The dove came back to him in the evening, grasping a torn olive leaf in its beak. Then Noah knew that the waters were subsiding from the earth” (Genesis 8:11). Remember when Noah was in the ark and sent out first a raven, then a dove to see if the waters of the flood were receding? The dove returned with the olive leaf, an image of the promise of peace, then and now.

“Even the sparrow finds a home, and the swallow a nest for herself, where she may lay her young…” (Psalm 84:3). The Psalmist often sings of the birds as examples of how all of God’s creatures find shelter with God. Can we expect any less?

“The flowers appear on the earth, and the time of singing has come, and the voice of the turtledove is heard in our land” (Song of Solomon 2:12). The sound of the birds is a marker of the seasons. The turtledoves—in my neck of the woods, they’re pigeons—wake me up in the morning. Rejoice in that.

“But they who wait for the Lord shall renew their strength, they shall mount up with wings like eagles, they shall run and not be weary, they shall walk and not faint” (Isaiah 40:31). Don’t you love watching an eagle fly on the wind? We can be like them. Waiting for the Lord. Waiting is a form of flying.

“Truly, truly, I say to you, the cock will not crow, till you have denied me three times” (John 13:38). Peter promises that he will stay with Jesus till the bitter end. He will not abandon the Lord. And yet he does, as Jesus promised, three times before the cock crows on Good Friday. The image of a roster is often found on church steeples, a reminder of God’s continual forgiveness.

Has a bird ever reminded you of God's love? Leave a comment below to share your story.

Lesson from an Old Bridge

Lesson from an Old Bridge

How a bridge helped her see change as a blessing.
by Sabra Ciancanelli

The memory of the righteous is a blessing.  —Proverbs 10:7 (ESV)

My son, Henry, burst through the front door and announced, “My school bus will be the last one to ever cross Madalin Bridge! It’s true!” he said. “The bus driver said so.” Lasts are always bittersweet. You wouldn’t think a person could be sad and sentimental over a bridge, but this almost-hundred-year-old bridge that stretches over Stony Creek has played a large role in my life. I’ve literally crossed this bridge a thousand times.

Years ago my sister Maria held my small hand and pointed out that the town never fixed the dam that broke. The day after she died, I looked at what was left of the crumbling stone wall, feeling just as broken.

For many years I trekked over the bridge every single day to go to the candy store, piano lessons, or church, or to jog to the river—the list is long and tracks my entire life. My father used to drop a stick on one side, and we watched our little makeshift boat disappear underfoot and reappear on the other side, a trick I later shared with my sons.

My son Solomon and I walked over the bridge tonight, the last night before the barricade is put in place. We took turns taking each other’s picture standing on it. I touched the rock edges and thought of the long walks and many worries that bridge carried me over—from high school tests to grieving losses—and then the happy times of pushing newborn Henry to show him off to the neighborhood. “Goodbye, bridge,” I said, patting the old stone wall. “You served us well.”

Heavenly Father, guide me to see change as a blessing, a bridge that connects our beautiful memories to gifts the future holds.

4. A Short Nighttime Prayer (2 Timothy 1:7)
For God’s not given me a spirit of fear,
But a spirit of love,
and of power, and a sound mind,
To live each day and glorify His name.

5. Popular Child’s Bedtime Prayer, 18th Century
Now I lay me down to sleep,
I pray the Lord my soul to keep.
If I should die before I wake,
I pray the Lord my soul to take.

Alternative Version for Children:
Now I lay me down to sleep,
I pray the Lord my soul to keep,
Watch and guard me through the night,
and wake me with the morning light. Amen.

6. A Beautiful Prayer to End the Day
Heavenly Father, my day is drawing to an end, and I'm ready to turn in. But before I do, I have to thank you for your faithfulness today. It's always a good day, even when things may not go the way I plan, or when the world seems in chaos, because you are in control.

For all the times when I was aware of your help today, all the times when your unseen presence seemed so near, thank you, God. But for all the ways you worked behind the scenes, unknown to me, moments when heaven-sent angels moved on my behalf in ways I'll never know, thank you for those also, Lord.

Forgive me for any foolish actions on my part today or things I did without first asking your blessing or wisdom. Those are moments I'd rather forget, but I'm so grateful for your forgiveness when I ask. I never want to go to bed without clearing the air between us, Lord. Our friendship means too much, and your holiness deserves that. Thank you for loving me just as I am. Your love compels me to give you my all and fills my heart with praise for the relationship we share because of Jesus.

As I close my eyes tonight, I'm praying for loved ones around me, for friends and those who need to know you, Lord. I'm praying that your love, like the billions of stars in the night sky outside, will touch them and help them see who you really are. I pray for our world and those in it. I pray for their needs as well as my own.

Grant me a good night's sleep tonight, God, so that I can awake refreshed and ready to begin another day loving you. Thank you again for blessings so undeserved and too numerous to count. I love being your child, and I long for the word "faithful" to describe my service to you, each day of every year. When I awake in the morning, may it be with a joyful smile, not a grumpy spirit. May your protection and your presence bathe this place with peace and safety against the enemy. Good night, Lord. In Jesus's name, Amen. --Rebecca Barlow Jordan

7. Father, We Thank Thee
Father, we thank thee for the night,
And for the pleasant morning light;
For rest and food and loving care,
And all that makes the day so fair.
Help us to do the things we should,
To be to others kind and good;
In all we do, in work or play,
To grow more loving every day.
--Rebecca Weston - 1890

8. Bedtime Prayer (song by Twila Paris)
Now I lay me down to sleep
I pray dear Lord that you will keep
Your eyes upon this sleeping world
Every little boy and girl

Bless the children far away
The ones who don't know how to pray
Those who are not feeling well
The little one the slipped and fell

Bless the puppy down the street
The neighbors I have yet to meet
Bless my mom and dad especially

Just one more thing I'd like to say
Before I close another day
I'd like to thank you Lord for all the ways
That You bless me

Bless the child whose home is torn
The babies who are not yet born
Bless the ones who take your word
To all the hearts that have not heard

Bless all your children everywhere
I hope they know how much you care
Maybe someday I can go
And tell them that You love them so

Bless Grandma and my Grandpa too
And all my friend and all they do
Bless every twig upon my family tree

Just one more thing I'll say to you
I'm so amazed by all you do
I'll thank you once again because it's true
That you bless me.

9. The Examen (Evening Reflection)
Written by St. Ignatius Loyola, the Examen is a daily process for prayerfully reflecting on your day.

1. Remember God’s presence.
Even after a trying day, God will quiet your soul as you remember His presence and intentionally seek to enter into it. Remember He’s with you. Invite Him to make Himself present to you.

2. Respond to Him with thanks.
Giving thanks gives God glory and helps us look on the bright side of a bad day. What small blessings can you thank God for?

3. Reflect on how God showed Himself to you.
God reveals himself through scripture, but we also see glimpses of him in nature, events, and people. Sometimes He shows up loudly through miraculous, divine intervention. Other times He shows Himself quietly through the beauty of a flower or an earnest conversation. As you look back over your day, can you identify moments where you sensed God’s revelation or intervention?

4. Repent of your failings.
I don’t like recognizing my own sin, but repentance is key to continual renewal in our relationship with God.As you reflect on your day, remember specific points where you failed. Bring your shortcomings before God and ask Him to forgive you.

5. Resolve to grow.
God is in the business of changing us, so don’t let your failings discourage or define you. His mercies are always new. Accept His forgiveness. Ask Him for grace to change. Is there anything you need to make right or anyone you need to apologize to? What can you do differently tomorrow?

God, we give you thanks for the delicious food on our table, for the loved ones gathered around, and for you, who make it all possible. We are humbly grateful. Amen.

Heavenly Father, for food and drink and health and strength and love and salvation we give you thanks. Amen.

God, grant that everyone gathered around our table may be strengthened by the food you have given us. Inspire us by fellowship with one another and with you. Amen.

Lord, bless this food to our use and us to your service. Amen.

God, many hands made this meal possible. Farmers grew it. Truckers drove it. Grocers sold it. We prepared it. Bless all those hands, and help us always remember our dependence on you. Amen.

Father, we thank you for this food and ask you to be with us as we share it. Help us go forth to serve you renewed and strengthened by your bounty. Amen.

God, we thank you for your great goodness in providing this food. Make us mindful of those who have less. And help us use our many blessings to aid those in need. Amen.

For Salvation

God, you created us for fellowship with you. We are designed to walk with you and delight in your ways.

But every day, we choose not to do that. We choose to go our own way. We put up a sign on our heart: Keep Out. You could just let us wander off. You could see that sign and walk away. But you don’t. You seek after each one of us, and you sent your Son, Jesus, among us to call us back. Back to a full, open and loving relationship with you. Back home. Help us respond to that call.

Help us turn away from ourselves and toward you. We are awestruck at this amazing gift you offer—life with you, forever. It is hard to comprehend such a gift. All we can do is touch it at the edges. But where knowledge fails, faith and love succeed. Give me faith in your saving power. And thank you for the love that rescues me. In the name of your Son, my redeemer, Jesus Christ. Amen.

Behold, I have put before you an open door, which no one can shut. (Revelation 3:8)

For a Stronger Faith

Lord, my faith feels weak. I sometimes doubt you and do things I wish I hadn’t done. But in weakness there is strength, and I thank you for the wonderful truth of what you do for human lives. You give us life, vibrant, exciting, unending life with an enthusiasm that never runs down. Help me to believe that with all my heart. For this I give you thanks. In Jesus’ name. Amen.

I will strengthen the weak. (Ezekiel 34:16)

Prayer in Crisis

God, I feel lost and overwhelmed. The world seems out of control, full of evil. Life has become a nightmare. Please help me remember that you made this world and declared it good. Give me the comfort of your presence and the confidence to trust you even when nothing seems to change. Calm my mind, bring peace to my heart and strengthen my spirit to carry on in the midst of loss. Lay a path for me, and help me follow your way as I move forward. Amen.

Prayers for Healing

When a Loved One Is Ill

God, my loved one is ill. I ask for your healing power to come upon them. You give us life and you have the power to renew life. I believe in your power to heal. Open my loved one to whatever form your healing power takes. And help me remember that, no matter what happens, you are the same yesterday, today and forever. You are always with us. Amen.

With God all things are possible. (Matthew 19:26)

For My Doctor

Thank you, God, for my doctor. Thank you for her skills and training. Give her the insight she needs to diagnose my illness and determine the right treatment. Steady her hand and give her the power to heal in your name. Amen.

And all who touched him were healed. (Mark 6:56)

When You Are Ill

Heavenly Father, you are the Great Physician. I turn to you in my sickness and ask for your healing. Put your hand upon me and let health and wholeness flow into me. Help me remember, in this time of vulnerability, my utter dependence on you. I commit myself to your loving arms. Amen.

Bless the Lord, O my soul… and forget not all his benefits: who forgiveth all thine iniquities; who healeth all thy diseases. (Psalm 103:2-3)

When Entering the Hospital

God, I am going into the hospital, and I am nervous about it. Help me find, in this strange world of sickness, much love and many new insights. Above all, help me hear your footsteps along the corridors and feel your presence when I am most frightened. With you at my side, I am confident and assured. Amen.

Prayer for Protection

Those who go to God for safety will be protected by him.
I will say to the Lord, “You are my place of safety and protection.
You are my God, and I trust you.”
God will save you from hidden traps and from deadly diseases.
He will protect you like a bird.
His truth will be like your armor and shield.
You will not be afraid of diseases that come in the dark or sickness that strikes at noon.
At your side 1,000 people may die, or even 10,000 right beside you.
But you will not be hurt.
You will only watch what happens. You will see the wicked punished. The Lord is your protection.
You have made God most high your place of safety.
Nothing bad will happen to you.
No disaster will come to your home.
He has put his angels in charge of you.
They will watch over you wherever you go.
They will catch you with their hands.
And you will not hit your foot on a rock.
You will walk on lions and cobras.
You will step on strong lions and snakes.
The Lord says, “If someone loves me, I will save him. I will protect those who know me. They will call to me, and I will answer them. I will be with them in trouble. I will rescue them and honor them. I will give them a long, full life. They will see how I can save.” Amen. (Psalm 91)

Prayers When Traveling

On the Street

Dear Lord, keep all members of my family in your watchful care as they make their way on the streets. Keep them safely in your sheltering arms. In Jesus’ name. Amen.

Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you. (I Peter 5:7)

In the Car

God, I commit this car and everyone in it to your protection. The streets are busy and the way can be confusing. Keep us safe from the dangers of the road. Give us courtesy and patience with other drivers. And help us reach our destination swiftly and easily, always knowing that you are with us. Amen.

How priceless is your unfailing love! Both high and low among men find refuge in the shadow of your wings. (Psalm 36:7)

In a Plane

God, sometimes flying makes me nervous. I know airplanes are safe, but still I worry. Give me your peace, God, and help me remember that you are watching over this plane every moment it is aloft. Bless the men and women in the cockpit. Bless the flight attendants and all the passengers. Keep your hands on the intricate workings of the engines and all other parts of this plane. Remind me that flight is a miraculous gift from you, and that when this plane speeds through the air, it is obeying the physical laws of the world you created. As I look at the sky above and the earth below, I praise you for the beauty of your creation. I place myself confidently in your care, knowing that, just as you guide me on the ground, so your loving arms protect me in the air. Amen.

Fear not, for I am with you. Be not dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you, I will help you, I will uphold you with my victorious right hand. (Isaiah 41:10)

Prayers for Relationships

When You Feel Resentful

God, I am feeling resentful. Maybe there are good reasons for my resentment. Maybe there aren’t. Either way, take these feelings from me. Resentment is really just a desire to hurt another—but I am only hurting myself. Help me forgive. Make me bigger than my resentment. Amen.

Let all bitterness and wrath and anger and clamor and slander be put away from you. (Ephesians 4:30-32)

For the Power to Forgive

God, you told us to forgive those who hurt us. And yet, I find this hard to do. Deliver me from the hateful pleasure of nursing a grudge. It brings only misery. Instead, help me want to forgive. Then fill my heart with generosity. Make me bigger than my little self. Help me know the incredible pleasure of reconciliation. Amen.

A man’s wisdom gives him patience; it is to his glory to overlook an offense. (Proverbs 19:11)

For a Competitor

Heavenly Father, I live in a society that values competition highly, a dog-eat-dog world that encourages people to win at all costs. But that’s not how you are at all. You are humble and kind and encourage us to love even our enemies. God, help me love those who compete against me. Help me do the right thing. And if someone who competes with me treats me badly, help me remember what you say: “Justice is mine; I will repay, saith the Lord.”

I commit this competitive situation into your hands and ask for your guidance. Help me behave with integrity and seek your blessing even for those who treat me poorly. Help me love them as you love me. In Jesus’ name. Amen.

Many are the afflictions of the righteous; but the Lord delivers him out of them all. (Psalm 34:19)

When Family Relationships Are Troubled

God, help us to see the good in those who make us so unhappy. Help us to be as generous as you are. Replace hostility with love and understanding. Help us search our hearts and be honest about our faults. Give us the happiness that families are meant to know. Amen.

Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you. (John 14:27)

When in Grief

Heavenly Father, you know how deep my grief is. I long for the touch of a hand, the sound of a voice that is stilled. You are merciful and kind. You will comfort my wounded heart. Wipe the tears from my eyes. Thank you for understanding so well our poor human hearts and for letting us lean on you. In Jesus’ name. Amen.

God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes. (Revelation 7:16-17)

When There Are Problems at Work

Lord, there is trouble at my work. Please give me the skill, tact and courage to fix it. Help me be an example and a resource to my boss and colleagues. Banish my fears and replace them with trust in you. Help me remember that all jobs, no matter how humble, are a calling from you, an opportunity to practice following your ways and making your presence known. Thank you for the gift of work. Help me use it wisely. Amen.

Commit your way to the Lord; and trust also in him, and he shall bring it to pass. (Psalm 37:5)

When in Financial Trouble

God, help us straighten out our financial problems. We haven’t been good stewards of our money. Give us a new attitude and a new commitment to managing our finances wisely and responsibly. If our problems are beyond our repair, help us find a way, your way, to meet our obligations. We place this need before you, knowing that you will guide us to a good solution. Amen.

But my God shall supply all your needs according to his riches in glory. (Philippians 4:19)

When Children Misbehave

God, I love my children but they are driving me to distraction. I’m losing control. I need help. I realize I can never direct them in their young lives until I live my own life with integrity. Give me the strength and wisdom to be a good example. Replace my anger and shouting with patience, trust and a sense of humor. Help me see their restless energy as a sign of vitality and a part of their development. Even when I am tired and upset, help me find joy with them. Help me remember that children are a gift from you, an opportunity to learn wisdom, discipline and true, selfless love. Thank you for that gift. Please don’t let it get me down. Amen.

Be strong and of a good courage; be not afraid, neither be thou dismayed. (Joshua 1:9)

For Someone Who Doesn’t Like Me

God, there is a person in my life who doesn’t like me. Or so it seems. If there is something I am doing to rub that person the wrong way, please help me recognize it and stop. Help me see myself as they see me, and give me the strength and humility to change the things that offend them. Establish a good spirit between us. I want a loving relationship with this person. Help me do what it takes to achieve that. Amen.

Be devoted to one another in brotherly love. Honor one another above yourselves. (Romans 12:10)

When Husband and Wife Are Fighting

Lord, help us to remember when we first met and the strong love that grew between us. At some point, we stopped putting you at the center of our relationship, and our love faltered. Help us to restore our marriage by turning to you. Harmonize our misunderstandings and show us the good in one another. Make us mindful of our tongues, controlling the unkind remark and the sharp retort. Help us instead say kind and loving things and ask forgiveness of one another. We put our marriage into your hands, God. Please heal it. All this we ask in the name of your Son, Jesus. Amen.

And the most important piece of clothing you must wear is love. Love is what binds us all together in perfect harmony. (Colossians 3:14)
