Day 10: Praying God’s Love Over Your Life

Day 10: Pray to Recommit Your Faith in God

“Be completely humble and gentle; be patient, bearing with one another in love.” Ephesians 4:2

“For Christ’s love compels us, because we are convinced that one died for all, and therefore all died.” 2 Corinthians 5:14

How to Love Others Today: Freely Forgive Offenses.

Jesus eliminated the limit on forgiveness when Peter asked how many times he should forgive (Matthew 18:21-22). Some hurts seem unforgivable, but with God’s help it’s possible to “promote love” through forgiveness (Proverbs 17:9).

Daily Bible Verse

Daily Bible Verse

"Be joyful in hope, patient in affliction, faithful in prayer." -Romans 12:12 NIV

Thoughts About Today's Verse

Sometimes the key to survival is simply "setting our jaw" and going on faithfully trusting that God is there helping us, despite the outward circumstances. Choosing joy through hope rather than despair, choosing patient endurance in times of affliction, and choosing faithfulness in prayer are all decisions of the will. We trust that God, who raised Jesus from the dead, can also change our circumstances because he hears our voice.

My Prayer

Create in me, O Mighty God, a resolute and steadfast heart so that I might persevere with joy no matter what the difficulty. This I ask through your faithful Son. Amen.

Day 9: Praying God’s Love Over Your Life

Day 9: Pray to Recommit Your Faith in God

“God’s unfailing love for us is an objective fact affirmed over and over in the Scriptures. It is true whether we believe it or not. Our doubts do not destroy God’s love, nor does our faith create it. It originates in the very nature of God, who is love, and it flows to us through our union with His beloved Son.” --Jerry Bridges

“The Lord your God is with you, he is mighty to save. He will take great delight in you, he will quiet you with his love, he will rejoice over you with singing.” Zephaniah 3:17

“He has shown you, O man, what is good. And what does the Lord require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God.” Micah 6:8

Daily Bible Verse

Daily Bible Verse

"This is the confidence we have in approaching God: that if we ask anything according to his will, he hears us. And if we know that he hears us - whatever we ask - we know that we have what we asked of him." -1 John 5:14-15 NIV

Thoughts About Today's Verse

Confidence before God. Through the presence of Jesus at the Father's right hand and the intercession of the Holy Spirit, we can have confidence and come boldly before the Creator of the universe and know that he not only hears us, but also cares for us. Wow, what an audience! Oh, and one final thing, he also acts on what we ask.

My Prayer

Abba Father, for the grace of your listening ear I thank you more than words can say. Through the authority of Jesus, my brother, and by the grace of your interceding Holy Spirit, I offer you my thanks and love this day. Amen.

Day 8: Praying God’s Love Over Your Life

Day 8: Pray for Faith Despite Changing Feelings

“Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good; his love endures forever.” 1 Chronicles 16:34

“A friend loves at all times, and a brother is born for a time of adversity.” Proverbs 17:17

How to Love Others Today: Rebuke Them When Needed.

Sometimes the best way we can love someone is by graciously confronting their sinful, destructive behavior (Proverbs 27:6, Matthew 18:15-17).

Daily Bible Verse

Daily Bible Verse

"Without faith it is impossible to please God, because anyone who comes to him must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who earnestly seek him." -Hebrews 11:6 NIV

Thoughts About Today's Verse

I believe! I believe that God not only knows me, but cares about me. I believe that God not only created the universe, but he knows the number of hairs on my head. I believe that God not only sent his Son to save the world, but that he's sending him back to bring me home. What's more, I believe that God is pleased by my belief.

My Prayer

Almighty, Most Holy Lord, I thank you for your steadfast love and enduring faithfulness. I thank you for your grace and mercy. I thank you for your might and power. I thank you for your awesome holiness. I thank you... for being you and choosing to reveal yourself to mortals like me. Through Jesus, your final Word, I pray. Amen.

Day 7: Praying God’s Love Over Your Life

Day 7: Pray for Faith Despite Changing Feelings

“Measure not God’s love and favor by your own feeling. The sun shines as clearly in the darkest day as it does in the brightest. The difference is not in the sun, but in some clouds which hinder the manifestation of the light thereof.” --Richard Sibbes

“Hate stirs up trouble, but love forgives all offenses.” Proverbs 10:12

“Love must be sincere. Hate what is evil; cling to what is good. Be devoted to one another in brotherly love. Honor one another above yourselves.” Romans 12:9-10

Daily Bible Verse

Daily Bible Verse

"Speaking the truth in love, we will in all things grow up into him who is the Head, that is, Christ." -Ephesians 4:15 NIV

Thoughts About Today's Verse

Speaking the truth is hard enough. You mean I have to do it in love? Yes, if I am to be Christ's man or woman, I must speak to others as he did.

My Prayer

Father, forgive me for the bitterness in my heart and unfairness on my lips. Through your Spirit, help me better use my speech to bless others and glorify you. May I speak your truth with your love today in all my conversations. Through him who is Truth and Love I pray. Amen.

Daily Bible Verse

Daily Bible Verse

"I know that my Redeemer lives, and that in the end he will stand upon the earth." -Job 19:25 NIV

Thoughts About Today's Verse

Beyond what these words were first meant to convey, we know today that our Redeemer will return as the Rider on the white horse in triumph and victory. Hallelujah, what a day!

My Prayer

Conquering King, Immortal God, I look forward to the day of your ultimate triumph in our world. Until that day, I pray that your Kingdom may be reflected in my church, my family and my life. Through the Rider on the white horse, I pray. Amen.

Day 6: Praying God’s Love Over Your Life

Day 6: Ask God for Ways You Can Love Others

“Above all, be loving. This ties everything together perfectly.” Colossians 3:14

“Dear friends, let us love one another, for love comes from God. Everyone who loves has been born of God and knows God. Whoever does not love does not know God, because God is love.” 1 John 4:7-8

How to Love Others Today: Pray for Them.

The Bible is full of people praying for the ones they love. The church prayed for Peter in jail (Acts 12:5). Jesus prayed for the disciples (John 17:6-19). Paul prayed for the Ephesian believers (Ephesians 1:15-23).

Jewels from Heaven

Jewels from Heaven
by Gina Hatchell

I took a walk down a woodland trail,
without really expecting anything new.
A rustling in the leaves made me pause,
and wonder what was hidden from view.

I kneeled down and spotted a tiny, white flower,
so perfectly formed to bloom for just an hour.
Thank you, Lord, for showing it to me alone,
such a secret I would never have known.

God sends jewels from heaven,
when I stop long enough to see.
Rare and precious treasures,
to show how much He loves me.

Once, I ran to the edge of some trees,
with a heavy burden in my heart.
The scent of a warm, summer rain,
wafted by on a gentle breeze.
A brilliant, red cardinal came to call,
and sang a cheerful song just for me;
and to think, I could have missed it all.

God send jewels from heaven,
when I stop long enough to see.
Rare and precious treasures,
to show how much He loves me.

I stepped outside late one night,
for just a moment of peace and quiet.
The wind softly whispered to me.
The black, velvet sky held a crescent moon,
and a million silver stars gave their light.
I threw up my hands and praised you, Lord,
for this glimpse of beauty I might have ignored.

God send jewels from heaven,
when I stop long enough to see.
Rare and precious treasures,
to show how much He loves me.

Day 5: Praying God’s Love Over Your Life

Day 5: Ask God for Ways You Can Love Others

“Believe God’s love and power more than you believe your own feelings and experiences. Your rock is Christ, and it is not the rock that ebbs and flows but the sea.” --Samuel Rutherford

“So now faith, hope, and love abide, these three; but the greatest of these is love.” 1 Cor. 13:13

“If you love me, you will obey what I command.” John 14:15

God’s Mighty Works

God’s Mighty Works
by Beth Fisher

Behold the wondrous miracles our awesome God performs.
He creates the gorgeous sunrise, that each new day adorns.
The power of the lightning, the loud rumble of the thunder…
It’s no surprise that our very lives are filled with awestruck wonder.

Each precious little baby, their bodies He creates.
His work is done invisibly, as each new mother awaits
The birth of her little miracle, for she knows its life will be
A gift from God, the Father, given abundantly.

The majestic mountain splendor, the power of the sea.
The radiant colors of sunsets, that He paints masterfully.
Volcano’s fiery fury, and water-formed rock formations
Didn’t end up here by accident, all are His creations.

A rainbow’s spectrum of color, that spreads across the sky.
A rippling brook that calms you, as it laughingly passes by.
The sight and scent of flowers, the eagle that gracefully soars.
Through all of these, our Generous Father, to us His love out pours.

But to me, the greatest miracle He will ever bring about
Is the grace He shows to each of us – it makes me want to shout!
For the very hands that form all of these wondrous sights we see
Are holding me in their embrace, lovingly and securely.

Day 4: Praying God’s Love Over Your Life

Day 4: Praise God for His Divine Love

“So now I am giving you a new commandment: Love each other. Just as I have loved you, you should love each other. Your love for one another will prove to the world that you are my disciples.” John 13:34-35

“There is no fear in love. But perfect love drives out fear, because fear has to do with punishment... We love because He first loved us.” 1 John 4:18-19

How to Love Others Today: Get Them Help When You Can’t Help Them.

A paralyzed man received healing from Jesus because his friends dropped him through a roof at Jesus’ feet. They were willing to do whatever it took it to get help for their friend! (Mark 2:1-12)

Day 3: Praying God’s Love Over Your Life

Day 3: Praise God for His Divine Love

“The nature of God’s love is unchangeable. Ours alternates all too readily. If it is our habit to love God with our own affection we shall turn cold towards Him whenever we are unhappy." --Watchman Nee

“But you, O Lord, are a compassionate and gracious God, slow to anger, abounding in love and faithfulness.” --Psalm 86:15

“Let all that you do be done in love.” --1 Corinthians 16:14

Can't Sleep? How to Pray for Peace of Mind

Can't Sleep? How to Pray for Peace of Mind

In times of great stress and anxiety, prayer makes a difference.

by Pablo Diaz

As we face daily challenges, many of us struggle to calm our thoughts. We let health issues, relationships, work, financial needs and other important matters cloud our mind. It is in these moments of relentless disruptive thoughts that we can turn to God for a peace of mind.

I know what it’s like waking up at 3 a.m. and not being able to get back to sleep while my mind races to things I need to do and issues that need to be resolved. Nothing helps me calm my thoughts more than talking to God in prayer. I can’t explain it, but I know that prayer works. Praying for peace of mind is one of the most powerful tools we have access to as people of faith.

In times of great anxiety, prayer makes a difference. When we hand our urgent thoughts over to God, the peace of heaven replaces our worries. I like how it is stated in the Bible:

Before you know it, a sense of God’s wholeness, everything coming together for good, will come and settle you down. It’s wonderful what happens when Christ displaces worry at the center of your life. (Philippians 4:6-7)

The next time you are restless and can’t sleep or focus, stop and pray for God to replace your worries with His peace.

Lord, let your peace overcome my worries and anxious thoughts.

Day 2: Praying God’s Love Over Your Life

Day 2: Pray to Know God’s Love

“Above all, love each other deeply, because love covers over a multitude of sins.” --1 Peter 4:8

“God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” --Romans 5:8

How to Love Others Today: Help Them Out of a Tight Spot.

When Jesus attended a wedding with His mother, she asked Him to help the hosts when they ran out of wine. We may not be able to miraculously solve a problem, but God has gifted us in other ways to help. (John 2:1-11)

The Prayer of Yes

The Prayer of Yes

A devotion to help you see God's light when you feel down.
by Brian Doyle

For the Son of God, Jesus Christ…was not “Yes” and “No,” but in him it has always been “Yes.” II Corinthians 1:19

Let’s be honest, sometimes you need little things in your pockets and on your desk that recharge your heart like tiny batteries. I have lots of them.

I have yellowing envelopes filled with what happened when my children got their first haircuts. I have some of their baby teeth, which my wife thinks is nuts, but whenever I touch those infinitesimal mountains I remember that I saw miracles emerge wet and mewling and miraculous from my wife. I have a note in my wallet sent to me by a Muslim woman in Australia after September 11, in which she said she was praying for the murdered and for the murderers, too, and that note is a university to me.

I have a stone from the beach where my mother’s people lived for a thousand years before coming to America. I have my wife’s father’s watch, which he wore until he died, which was long before I met him. I wear the ring my wife gave me when she said yes, a yes that made me speechless, and still does.

It seems to me that all these things are ways of saying yes on the days when you are worn down by the ocean of no. But you know and I know that yes is the road to light.

Dear Lord, may I ask for the daily strength to say yes even when I am really tired and sad and there’s hardly any hope? Because You are the Yes, and the fact is that I need Your Yes as food for my hungry soul.

Grow a Biblical Garden

Then God said, “Let the land produce vegetation: seed-bearing plants and trees on the land that bear fruit with seed in it, according to their various kinds.” And it was so. Genesis 1:11

On the third day God created plants...  Anyone who has ever spent time tilling the soil, nurturing seeds and watching them bloom recognizes there is a very spiritual side to gardening—a deep communion with God that happens when we help nature flourish.

By creating a Bible Garden and growing the plants mentioned in God’s Word, we help draw that connection even closer. There are more than 125 plants, herbs and trees referenced in Scripture. The list below features hardy varieties that would grace any garden.

Anise (Pimpinella anisum)
Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye pay tithe of mint and anise and cumin, and have omitted the weightier matters of the law, judgment… Matthew 23:23

This lovely plant is used to flavor licorice. Delicious in salads, the seeds are also added to cakes, breads, soups and stews.

Black Mustard (Brassica nigra)
He told them another parable: "The kingdom of heaven is like a mustard seed, which a man took and planted in his field. Matthew 13:31

This ancient herb is easy to grow and quickly transforms into a highly prolific plant. Black mustard is an annual weedy plant cultivated for its seeds which are commonly used as a spice.

Christ's Thorn (Paliurus Spina-Christi)
They put a purple robe on Him, then twisted together a crown of thorns and set it on Him. Mark 15:17

Christ's crown of thorns is believed to have been made from this plant. An ornamental shrub with small flowers that grow in small clusters, Christ's thorn should be placed in a container as it spreads easily.

Common Olive (Olea europaea)
But I am like an olive tree flourishing in the house of God; I trust in God's unfailing love for ever and ever. Psalm 52:8

The olive branch is often used to symbolize peace and brotherhood and is mentioned many times in the Bible: Zechariah 4:3, Deuteronomy 33:24 Job 29:6 and Job 15:33.  A small evergreen tree with brilliant yellow flowers and light green foliage it is said to have come to the United States with the Franciscan fathers.

Coriander/Cilantro (Coriandrum sativu)
The people of Israel called the bread manna. It was white like coriander seed and tasted like wafers made with honey. Exodus 16:31

The leaves of this tasty herb can be used to season soups, salads and salsa. Seeds are often used as a flavoring for pickles, means and sausage. Coriander was brought to North America in the late 1600s and was one of the first spices cultivated by early settlers.

Cumin (Cuminum cyminum)
Caraway is not threshed with a sledge, nor is the wheel of a cart rolled over cumin; caraway is beaten out with a rod, and cumin with a stick. Isaiah 28:27

Cumin is also mentioned in the New Testament (Matthew 23:23). The cumin plant is a small annual that only grows to be about one foot in height. Used since ancient times, seeds excavated in India date back to the second millennium BC.

Dill (Anethum graveolens)
When he has leveled its surface, does he not scatter dill, sow cumin, and put in wheat in rows and barley in its proper place, and emmer as the border? Isaiah 28:25

The dill plant provides a valuable food source for butterfly larvae and will attract beautiful butterflies to your garden. This fragrant culinary herb is often added to sauces and used for pickling.

Nettle (Urtica dioica)
Among the bushes they cry out; Under the nettles they are gathered together. Job 30:7

The nettle is mentioned in several Bible verses: Proverbs 24:30-31, Hosea 9:6 and Zephaniah 2:9. This perennial plant is often found growing wild so select your location carefully as nettles are very hardy and can spread quickly.

For more information on growing Bible plants in your garden, here’s a full list.

Pray the Bible: Day 22

Moses’ Prayer

“Please show me Your glorious presence.” Exodus 33:18

Although you may not always feel it, God is ever present. He is your Father, your divine mentor and eternal guide on life’s journey. Build your relationship with Him through prayer and devotion and you’ll always know that He is beside you.

Lord, thank You for Your guiding presence in my life. Teach me to enjoy the journey—every fork, twist and bump—and give me the strength and courage to continue on in faith.

Mothers of the Bible

To commemorate Mother's Day, we're paying tribute to some of the most inspiring matriarchal figures in the Bible, from Eve, the Mother of Humanity, to Mary, the Mother of Jesus.

Eve, Mother of All Humanity
Then the Lord God said, “It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make a helper who is just right for him.” Genesis 2:18

Eve was the first woman, the first wife, and the first mother. Though she was not without her flaws and failings, she also experienced many firsts, both joyful and heartbreaking: She was the first to experience childbirth, the first to see her children at odds with one another, the first to experience the grief of losing a child and of seeing one of her offspring commit violence.

Sarah, Mother of Isaac
"I will bless her and will surely give you a son by her. I will bless her so that she will be the mother of nations; kings of peoples will come from her." Genesis 17:16

Many couples can identify with the sorrows of Sarah and her husband, Abraham. They longed to have a child together, but they were still childless long after they might reasonably have hoped to conceive. But God sent three angels to assure Abraham that he would be blessed with a son by Sarah. As promised, Sarah soon gave birth to Isaac and thereby was anointed the mother of all Israel.

Rebekah, Mother of Jacob and Esau
"Two nations are in your womb, and two peoples from within you will be separated; one people will be stronger than the other, and the older will serve the younger." Genesis 25:24

Rebekah was wife to Isaac, and like her mother-in-law, Sarah, she was for many years unable to bear a child. Isaac prayed for God to bless Rebekah with a child, and his prayers were answered: She gave birth to twins, Esau and Jacob. Esau was born first, but Jacob was his mother's favorite. This caused strife between the two brothers, though they eventually made peace. Jacob would father 12 sons, by several mothers, and they would go on to lead the 12 tribes of Israel.

Jochebed, Mother of Moses
So the woman took the baby and nursed him. When the child grew older, she took him to Pharaoh's daughter and he became her son. She named him Moses, saying, "I drew him out of the water." Exodus 2:9-10

Having given birth to a son at a time when the Pharoah was threatening to have all male Hebrew babies killed, Jochebed hid her baby among the reeds in a waterproofed basket. He was discovered there by a royal maidservant and brought to the Pharoah's daughter. Jochebed's daughter, Miriam, witnessed this and convinced the Pharoah's daughter to allow a Hebrew woman to nurse the child. That woman was Jochebed. Having nursed him and raised him, Jochebed brought her son back to the Pharoah's daughter to insure that he would be safe. God would eventually use Moses to lead the Hebrews out of slavery.

Jochebed was also mother to Aaron, a high priest of Israel.

Hannah, Mother of Samuel
Eli answered, "Go in peace, and may the God of Israel grant you what you have asked of him." 1 Samuel 1:17

Hannah was unable to have children and her husband's other wife, who had born children, taunted her for it. She prayed in the house of worship at Shiloh for God to bless her with a child, and the high priest Eli blessed. Hannah, who had promised God that if He blessed her with a son, she would dedicate him to His service, soon gave birth to a child she named Samuel, who would be Israel's first prophet. God further blessed Hannah with three more sons and two daughters.

Elizabeth, Mother of John the Baptist
When Elizabeth heard Mary's greeting, the baby leaped in her womb, and Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit. In a loud voice she exclaimed: "Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the child you will bear!" Luke 1:41-42

Elizabeth and her husband, Zechariah, were both advanced enough in age that when the angel Gabriel told Zechariah they would soon have a child, Zechariah refused to believe it. (He was made mute for his lack of faith.)

As Gabriel had promised, Elizabeth soon conceived, and while she was pregnant, she received a visit from Mary, who was also with child. The Bible tells us that Elizabeth's son jumped for joy within her at the sound of Mary's voice.

Elizabeth and Zechariah named their child John, as Gabriel had instructed them to do, and when they had done so, Zechariah's power of speech immediately returned. John would grow up to be John the Baptist, the prophet who foretold the coming of the Christ: Mary's son, Jesus.

Mary, Mother of Jesus
"I am the Lord's servant," Mary answered. "May it be to me as you have said." Then the angel left her. Luke 1:38

Mary, the mother of Jesus, is the most beloved and revered woman in the Bible.  An angel appeared to her and said, "Hail, thou who art full of grace; the Lord is with thee; blessed art thou among women." Nervous as she may have been, she willingly accepted her role, to give birth to Jesus. "He shall be great, and men will know him for the Son of the most High; the Lord God will give him the throne of his father David, and he shall reign over the house of Jacob eternally," the angel told her.  She remained stalwart in her faith. As she said after she learned she would give birth to Jesus, "Behold, from this day forward all generations will count me blessed."

“Show me mercy, Son of David. My daughter is suffering terribly from demon possession.... Lord, help me.” Matthew 15:22, 25

George Mueller said, “We must pray patiently... until we obtain an answer.” When you consistently pray with steadfast faith, your prayers can cast out demons— addiction, greed, pride, envy—move mountains and make the impossible, possible.

Lord, help all those struggling with addiction. Heal them with Your loving touch and lead them to the path of recovery.
