Let Go and Let God

Let Go and Let God

As children bring their broken toys,
With tears for us to mend,
I brought my broken dreams to God,
Because He is my friend.
But then instead of leaving Him in peace to work alone,
I hung around and tried to help,
With ways that were my own.
At last, I snatched them back again and cried,
"How can you be so slow?"
"My child" He said, "What could I do?
You never did let go."

40 Days of Pocket Prayers: Day 31

When the disciples asked Jesus to teach them to pray, he gave them a prayer. Not a lecture on prayer. Not the doctrine of prayer. He gave them a quotable, repeatable, portable prayer (Luke 11:1-4).

Could you use the same? It seems to me that the prayers of the Bible can be distilled into one. The result is a simple, easy-to-remember, pocket-size prayer.

Once a day for 40 days I'll post a simple prayer that brings peace and rest.

Day 31

Oh, give thanks to the Lord! Call upon His name; make known His deeds among the peoples! Sing to Him, sing psalms to Him; talk of all His wondrous works! ~1 Chronicles 16:8?9

Father, you are so worthy of it all--my attention, praise, worship, and love. Your works are amazing, beyond anything I can even express.

Help me be a light that shines toward you today. It is often hard for me to stand out from the world and be different. Give me the courage to make your goodness known and to never be ashamed.

Please give peace to my friends who are standing up for you and as a result have found themselves friendless or with few who understand them.

I thank you for your wonderful works and all that you have done and will do.

In the glorious name of Jesus Christ, amen.

Day 30

And Jesus took the loaves, and when He had given thanks He distributed them to the disciples, and the disciples to those sitting down; and likewise of the fish, as much as they wanted. ~John 6:11

Oh, Father, you multiply the loaves and fishes. You perform miracles that you alone are capable of. You speak all there is into being.

Help me experience your mighty power today. Show me that you are capable of more than I could ever ask or imagine. And when I see your power at work, help me be grateful for it.

I pray for everyone who feels there is not much to give thanks for right now. They have lost a child. They are sick. They have lost jobs. Fill their hearts with inexplicable gratitude, for you are still good.

I give you thanks for your almighty power and kindness. You didn't have to feed five thousand men on that hill two thousand years ago, but thank you for showing your love even through lunch.

In Jesus' name I pray, amen.

Heavenly Father, I sit here in awe of all that I should thank you for. You are so much bigger and greater than I could ever understand.

Give me reminders to be grateful today. Don't allow me to miss the small--or big==blessings around me. Fill my heart with gratitude.

For my friends who struggle to pray, would you give them a desire to know you more. Teach them to pray, as you're teaching me to.

Thank you for Jesus. Thank you for loving us. Thank you for the gift of grace.

Now then, we are ambassadors for Christ, as though God were pleading through us: we implore you on Christ's behalf, be reconciled to God. For He made Him who knew no sin to be sin for us, that we might become the righteousness of God in Him. ~2 Corinthians 5:20?21

God above, you have torn the veil. You have conquered death and made a way for me to have a relationship with you.

I forget so quickly that I can talk to you anytime. Allow me to turn to you today with each step, question, and difficulty.

Surround my friends and family with your forgiveness today. Remind them that you are eager to forgive them. Help them let go of any guilt they cling to.

You, O Lord, are a shield for me, my glory and the One who lifts up my head. I cried to the Lord with my voice, and He heard me from His holy hill. ~Psalm 3:3?4

Dear God, holy and mighty one. You are worthy of all praise, all honor. Your steadfast love amazes me each morning.

When I hear voices around me saying I am not good enough, help me hear your truth in my heart and give me strength.

Be with those who feel inadequate and doubt if anyone cares about them. When they question their value, give them a deeper sense of worth in Christ, and Christ alone.

Heavenly Father, your love and acceptance don't stop. You are the well of grace and love that I must draw from daily.

Help me today to love those who are hard for me to love. Humble me in their presence and show me a side of them I've been too prideful to see.

Be with those people and protect them. Whatever past pain or hurt is causing them to lash out, bring it to the surface and heal them.

Thank you for your redemptive nature and your ability to break down walls among your children.

Through Christ I pray, amen.

Do the same for those who are struggling with addiction. I am so afraid for them and where their lives are headed. Bring them to their knees so that they may see and know you.

Father, you can wipe out the strongest army, move mountains, and create the earth out of nothing. Your strength and loving-kindness know no end.

Remind me of your power now. I am so quick to run to a friend for help and then feel let down. Be my strength in all situations.

My friends come to me for help sometimes, but you alone are the answer to their troubles. Help them to look to you first and always.

Thank you for being on our side and fighting for us.

Help me to see a light at the end of my tunnel. Sometimes I can barely remember what light looks like or what it feels like to have simple joy. Help me to focus on you even in the darkness.

Support my friends as they suffer losses like miscarriages, death, and illness. When these trials plague those I love, I feel so helpless. Would you show off your light in their lives?

Father in heaven, you are the God of King David and my God too. You reign forever and over everything.

Bring me peace when I am overwhelmed. I don’t know how I can accomplish all of the things I need to get done. Light my path and show me the activities and obligations I can say no to. Help me release the burdens that preoccupy my mind and keep you at bay. Come near.

God, please hear the cries of those who feel overwhelmed as they serve you. Many of them don’t feel your presence right now in their lives. Remind them of your faithfulness.

Help me as I search to find worth. I feel so unworthy of love at times, and I need your help to discover where my true worth is.

Be strength for my friends who don’t believe their sin is taken care of and are walking around with unnecessary weight on their shoulders.

Think Positive Today, Be Healthy Tomorrow

Think Positive Today, Be Healthy Tomorrow

New research suggests that optimism has long-term health benefits.
by Holly Lebowitz Rossi

People who feel that their daily activities are meaningful tend to be healthier and happier. They may even live longer than those who don’t believe their daily lives have purpose. These are the findings of a new study that analyzed self-reported data and biological markers of 7,000 adults over age 50 over the four-year period between 2012 and 2016.

The study, which was published in January in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS), identified a list of emotional and physical health benefits among participants who rate their daily lives higher on a “worthwhile” scale. The findings were found to be accurate independent of age, gender, educational background and socioeconomic status. The benefits include:

—Stronger personal relationships
—Less chronic pain
—Greater physical strength
—Faster walking speed
—Fewer depressive symptoms
—Less reported loneliness
—Stronger immunity
—Broad social engagement

The authors summarized the findings, saying, “The feeling that life is filled with worthwhile activities may promote healthy aging and help sustain meaningful social relationships and optimal use of time at older ages.”

The relationship between finding meaning in daily life and experiencing better mental and physical health is complex. But this research reinforces the importance of social connection and personal purpose at a time when many speak of a “loneliness epidemic” that particularly affects older adults. It encourages each of us to take the time to focus on positive activities that bring us both pleasure and purpose.

Daisy Fancourt, lead co-author of the study, told the University College London that the research did not track what daily activities each participant found meaningful. “For some it might be supporting their families, for others a particular accomplishment in their work or hobby, enjoying nature or perhaps following a favorite sports team,” she said, “What is important is that the individual finds these activities worthwhile and feels they give a sense of meaning to life.”

What do you find gives your daily life the most purpose?

Now may the God of peace Himself sanctify you completely; and may your whole spirit, soul, and body be preserved blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. He who calls you is faithful, who also will do it. ~1 Thessalonians 5:23–24

Dear God, your faithfulness is sure and steady. Your being is whole and complete.

When I feel incomplete, like there are holes in me, I try and fill them with things that are not of you. But you have called me to something greater. Show me what that is and allow me to find fulfillment in you.

Protect my friends’ hearts who have been in destructive relationships. They feel broken and frightened. Mend their wounds and give them peace.

Who being the brightness of His glory and the express image of His person, and upholding all things by the word of His power, when He had by Himself purged our sins, sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high, having become so much better than the angels, as He has by inheritance obtained a more excellent name than they. ~Hebrews 1:3–4

Father, you created all things simply with your words. One word from you and your power is evident. I am amazed by you.

I need your power in my life, God. I face impossible circumstances and am desperate for a miracle. Would you show me your power in my life today?

God, for those who have a small view of you, show them how mighty and enormous you actually are. Help them to find comfort in that knowledge.

Thank you for sending your Son, who has made our relationship with you possible.

It’s in the all-powerful name of Jesus that I pray, amen.

40 Days of Pocket Prayers: Day 8

When the disciples asked Jesus to teach them to pray, he gave them a prayer. Not a lecture on prayer. Not the doctrine of prayer. He gave them a quotable, repeatable, portable prayer (Luke 11:1-4).

Could you use the same? It seems to me that the prayers of the Bible can be distilled into one. The result is a simple, easy-to-remember, pocket-size prayer.

Once a day for 40 days I'll post a simple prayer that brings peace and rest.

Day 8

For to You, O Lord, I lift up my soul. For You, Lord, are good, and ready to forgive, and abundant in mercy to all those who call upon You. ~Psalm 86:4–5

God, you are abounding in forgiveness and mercy and goodness I cannot understand in this life. I worship you with my heart and soul.

As I sit in regret and guilt over past sin, remind me of your forgiveness. Please let me feel your mercy. Fill me with it so I can give it to others I encounter today.

Walk closely with my family so they can know your grace. Lift their burdens and point their faces toward you.

I give you thanks for the grace I do not deserve and your mercies, which are new every morning.

In Christ’s name, amen.

40 Days of Pocket Prayers: Day 7

When the disciples asked Jesus to teach them to pray, he gave them a prayer. Not a lecture on prayer. Not the doctrine of prayer. He gave them a quotable, repeatable, portable prayer (Luke 11:1-4).

Could you use the same? It seems to me that the prayers of the Bible can be distilled into one. The result is a simple, easy-to-remember, pocket-size prayer.

Once a day for 40 days I'll post a simple prayer that brings peace and rest.

Day 7

Good and upright is the Lord; therefore He teaches sinners in the way. The humble He guides in justice, and the humble He teaches His way. ~Psalm 25:8–9

Dear father, you are good. Your ways are perfect and above my own. You deserve my full obedience and my worship. You are my teacher and authority because of your goodness.

Humble me today when I choose my way over yours. Use my prideful moments as an opportunity to teach me and redirect me.

Show my friends that your goodness is more important than their desires. Provide them with encouragement to seek your good and upright way.

Thank you for your constant instruction and concern for each step of my life.

In the name of Jesus I pray these things, amen.

How to Pray in a Difficult Moment

How to Pray in a Difficult Moment

When facing a near-impossible situation, here are words of prayer that may help.
by Julia Attaway

I had lunch with a friend who is going through a grave problem. It’s a situation similar to something I faced a couple of years ago. She had a difficult conversation coming up and asked me for guidance. “I don’t know how to do this!” she told me, her pain echoing across the table.

I suddenly had no recollection of how I’d gotten through my own near-impossible situation. What hit me instead was a visceral recollection of the terror of groping my way through darkness, unsure of what to do and uncertain if there was a way out.

Blank-brained and bereft of wisdom, I reached for a prayer I have prayed thousands of times: Holy Spirit, give me the words.

A moment later I said, haltingly, “When you are in a really dark place it isn’t enough to reach for God in advance, saying ‘God, help me say the right thing.’”

I paused and prayed again, Holy Spirit, give me the words. The next thought came.

“We have to connect with Him before each sentence we say.”

I paused a third time, just long enough to pray my prayer again: Holy Spirit, give me the words.

“Ask the Holy Spirit to give you the words He wants you to say. If a thought comes to mind that was not there before, speak it.”

Holy Spirit, give me the words.

“If nothing comes to mind, remain silent. Don’t give in to the temptation to say what you want to say. Say only what you are given.”

Holy Spirit, give me the words.

I took a sip of water. My friend nodded.

In the silence that followed, I remembered one thing that had helped me get through my near-impossible situation: I’d learned to use inching-forward prayers. These were the small, step-by-step whispers like Holy Spirit, give me the words that repeatedly, relentlessly reached out for God. They were the prayers that asked Him to show me one thing to say or do. For in very dark times, the only way to take the next step, say the next word or do the next unfathomably difficult thing is to seek His presence in every moment.

40 Days of Pocket Prayers: Day 6

When the disciples asked Jesus to teach them to pray, he gave them a prayer. Not a lecture on prayer. Not the doctrine of prayer. He gave them a quotable, repeatable, portable prayer (Luke 11:1-4).

Could you use the same? It seems to me that the prayers of the Bible can be distilled into one. The result is a simple, easy-to-remember, pocket-size prayer.

Once a day for 40 days I'll post a simple prayer that brings peace and rest.

Day 6

For unto us a Child is born, unto us a Son is given; and the government will be upon His shoulder. And His name will be called Wonderful, Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. ~Isaiah 9:6

Everlasting father, you are the mighty God. You sent your Son and performed the final sacrifice, and you deserve all of our praise.

I need your help today. I am a sinner and am feeling the weight of my sin. Show me what your Son’s birth means for me in this moment.

Give grace to those who have not accepted your Son and do not know the freedom he gives. Let them see that you are their loving Father.

Thank you for loving me not just yesterday or today but always, no matter the depth of my sin. I am grateful.

In your Son’s precious name, amen.

40 Days of Pocket Prayers: Day 5

When the disciples asked Jesus to teach them to pray, he gave them a prayer. Not a lecture on prayer. Not the doctrine of prayer. He gave them a quotable, repeatable, portable prayer (Luke 11:1-4).

Could you use the same? It seems to me that the prayers of the Bible can be distilled into one. The result is a simple, easy-to-remember, pocket-size prayer.

Once a day for 40 days I'll post a simple prayer that brings peace and rest.

Day 5

A father of the fatherless, a defender of widows, is God in His holy habitation. God sets the solitary in families; He brings out those who are bound into prosperity. ~Psalm 68:5–6

Dear God, you are the Father to the fatherless. You provide for those without a family and defend the weak as their own father would.

Today I feel defenseless. When I feel attacked, would you remind me that you protect me? Would you be my father and defender today?

Please defend those who are weak and afraid and feel forgotten. Show up in their lives today and remind them that they are your children and you are their heavenly Father.

Thank you for giving me a spiritual family that can never be taken away.

I pray this in the name of Jesus, amen.

Fascinating Facts About the Near-Death Experiences of Children

Fascinating Facts About the Near-Death Experiences of Children
by Rakeem Nelson

Did you know that nearly 85 percent of children who undergo cardiac arrest have a near-death experience (NDE)? A rate that’s more than twice as high as for adults—and numbering in the thousands every year, according to the International Association for Near Death Studies (IANDS). So what exactly do children see in heaven and how does it affect their lives? Here are some fascinating facts about children NDEs.

Just like adult NDE survivors, children who get a peek at heaven might see bright lights, tunnels and a single holy figure. Child NDEs tend to be shorter than adult NDEs, but can be just as intense, researcher and NDE expert P.M.H. Atwater found.

Kids are more likely to see deceased loved ones and pets – even relatives they’ve never met – in heaven, reports IANDS.

Babies can have NDEs…yes, babies! The Horizon Research Foundation documents the case of one boy who almost died at six months due to kidney failure. As he got older, his parents noticed how panicky he became in car rides through tunnels. Once he turned four and his grandfather was near death, the boy told his parents of his own NDE.

Child NDE survivors are more likely to have happier marriages compared to adult survivors, according to research from P.M.H. Atwater.

Kids who survive NDEs often try to communicate with spirits or guardian angels or what their parents might call “imaginary friends,” IANDS found.

Children often cite parents as the reason for coming back from the other side, according to P.M.H Atwater.

NDEs leave children forever changed. In fact, according to IANDS, children NDE survivors show signs of altered sleep patterns, attentiveness and an increased interest in philosophical subjects like universal love. They’re also able to understand abstract concepts better than their peers.

Day 4

Yet for us there is one God, the Father, of whom are all things, and we for Him; and one Lord Jesus Christ, through whom are all things, and through whom we live. ~1 Corinthians 8:6

God, you are my father who gives all good things. I have life because of you, and there is no one like you.

I ask that you would deepen that truth in my heart today. Point out my idols and the things I worship apart from you, that I would remember you alone are my God.

Give my friends and loved ones freedom from their idols as well so they can fully enjoy being part of your family. Help them know that you are their only creator and nothing on this earth has ownership of them.

Thank you for loving us, your creation, even when we go astray.

In Jesus’ name, amen.

Day 3

Our Father in heaven, hallowed be Your name. Your kingdom come. Your will be done on earth as it is in heaven. ~Matthew 6:9–10

Father, you are above all, know all, and see all. Yet you hear me as if I am your only creation.

May I not view you as a distant father, but as one who has come to earth and understands the challenges and temptations of my life. Be near me today and whisper reminders that you are close and holding me as your child.

My friends need you today as they make difficult decisions in their workplaces and within their families. Would you show them that you are closer than even their earthly fathers?

Thank you for hearing me and listening to my pleas.

It’s in Jesus’ name I pray this, amen.

Day 2

And because you are sons, God has sent forth the Spirit of His Son into your hearts, crying out, "Abba, Father!" ~Galatians 4:6

Abba, thank you for sending a helper to direct my steps. You know everything and will guide me in your will.

Help me to know your will. Keep me on the path you have set for me. Give me the desire to stay true to that path, and forgive me for the times I have already strayed from you.

Be with my friends and family who are at a crossroads and don't know what to do next. May your spirit guide them and make the best decision clear.

Thank you for caring about the details of my life, for not believing any request is too small.

I pray this in Jesus' name, amen.

Four Emergency Prayers

Four Emergency Prayers

When disaster strikes and words escape you, here's how to pray.
by Bob Hostetler

Disaster strikes. An emergency looms. A crisis threatens.

Sometimes there is no time to stop and pray. Events are moving too fast, and we can barely form a cohesive thought, let alone pause to bow our heads or fold our hands.

What do we do at such times? How can we pray? In moments like those, it pays to have a few go-to prayers readily available, in our memories and vocabularies. Here are a handful of “911 prayers” that may help when panic threatens to set in and words seem to escape us:

1)  Help (Psalm 12:1)
Anne Lamott, in her short book, Help, Thanks, Wow, boils down prayer to three essentials, one of which is “Help.” It is the most basic of prayers. We may get fancier or wordier, but God’s ears seem to be tuned in to “Help,” perhaps as much as or more than any other prayer.

2)  Lord, have mercy (Matthew 20:31)
So many cries and groans come to our minds and hearts in the course of a day or week, and many of them are urgent. “Lord, have mercy” is among my most frequent and heartfelt prayers at such times. I don’t have to know the details of an emergency, nor do I have to get more specific. God knows, so I simply cry out, like the blind men described in Matthew’s Gospel, “Lord, have mercy,” and trust Him to answer according to His sovereign insight, wisdom and power.

3)  Our help is in the name of the Lord (Psalm 124:8)
Sometimes all we can do is to remind ourselves that “when other helpers fail and comforts flee,” God abides with us still—and He, after all, is the source of any help we may receive. At such times the biblical prayer, “Our help is in the name of the Lord, the maker of heaven and earth,” makes a great 911 prayer.

4)  We do not know what to do, but our eyes are on you (2 Chronicles 20:12)
When a foreign army threatened Israel’s capital, the king prayed to God, “We do not know what to do but our eyes are on you.” It is a confession, affirmation and petition rolled into one.

It helps to keep these four biblical prayers in mind when emergencies arise, but they can be a valuable resource, applicable to virtually any situation—especially when the need is deepest.

How Does Personality Affect Your Prayer?

How Does Personality Affect Your Prayer?

Discovering and understanding your personality can be an aid to prayer.
by Bob Hostetler

A way of understanding human personality has gained wide popularity in recent years. It is called the Enneagram. Its origins are a subject of debate and some people view the concept suspiciously or dismissively. To others, however, it is a helpful way to describe and understand human personality.

The “Enneagram” outlines nine personality types that are commonly identified by numbers. Each personality (1-9) is characterized by a dominant strength or virtue and a dominant weakness or vice (which tends to be that person’s default position when under stress). There is much more to it than that, and some enneagram enthusiasts can talk and talk about each type and its “wings” and so on.

But discovering and understanding your personality can be an aid to prayer. For example, a “1” in enneagram terms is a “reformer”—a person who longs to be good, “right,” or even perfect, but is also tempted to become critical and judgmental. If you’re a “1,” you probably take yourself and your spirituality very seriously. So how does that personality affect your prayer life? You probably tend to have high expectations. You may beat yourself up if you think your prayer life is lacking. So, you may find it helpful to follow the ancient practice of fixed-hour prayer that is explained in such books as Phyllis Tickle’s The Divine Hours. Or you may want to relax your prayer habit, perhaps by taking prayer walks or injecting some form of play (such as coloring or painting) into your prayer life.

If you’ve never taken an enneagram assessment, you may want to start there (this can be done online). If you know your enneagram, however, here is a brief overview of the types, and possible corresponding prayer practices that each type may find beneficial (some because they match a person’s strengths, and others because they counter a person’s weaknesses):

1.  The Reformer
Strength: Being “good” or perfect
Weakness: Criticism, anger
Prayer Practices: Fixed hour prayer, using prayer books, prayer walks, employing “play” in prayer

2.  The Helper
Strength: Caring, generous
Weakness: Pride, burnout
Prayer Practices: Solitude, prayer walks, “soaking prayer” (spending time in God’s presence without expectations or demands)

3.  The Achiever
Strength: Success-oriented, rule-following
Weakness: Deceit, concern for appearances
Prayer Practices: Silence, solitude, learning to “be” in prayer (as opposed to accomplishing tasks)

4.  The Individualist
Strength: Sensitive, introspective
Weakness: Envy, melancholy
Prayer Practices: Silence, solitude, journaling, expressions of trust and gratitude

5.  The Investigator
Strength: Learning, thinking
Weakness: Secretiveness, isolation
Prayer Practices: Reading prayer-related books, conversational prayer, praying aloud, praying with others

6.  The Loyalist
Strength: Faith, believing
Weakness: Doubt, indecision
Prayer Practices: Praying affirmations, praying aloud, memorization, prayer journaling

7.  The Enthusiast
Strength: Wisdom, planning
Weakness: Dissatisfaction, impatience
Prayer Practices: A regular prayer routine, using prayer aids, prayer journaling—especially prayers of praise and gratitude

8.  The Challenger
Strength: High regard for truth, unafraid of conflict
Weakness: Self-sufficiency
Prayer Practices: Praying affirmations, praying aloud, prayers of submission, trust, and abandonment

9.  The Peacemaker
Strength: Loving
Weakness: Avoiding conflict
Prayer Practices: Singing, listening to music, praying the Psalms, praying with others

The above is, of course, an over-simplification, and a case could be made that human personality is so complex that a person should try virtually everything in prayer in order to find a combination that “fits.” I certainly agree with that view. But you may be helped by thinking about how your personality influences your prayer life, and how your prayer life can be enriched by cultivating those practices that take advantage of your personality strengths and counter your weaknesses.

Day 1

For you did not receive the spirit of bondage again to fear, but you received the Spirit of adoption by whom we cry out, "Abba, Father." ~Romans 8:15

Father, you have made me your child through your Spirit. In your kindness you adopted me and delivered me from sin and death.

Remind me today what it means to be your child and to be free from that law. It is so easy for me to live my day on my own terms. Help me to live it in light of your grace.

I pray for my friends and family. Help them experience your love as their father and feel their inheritance in your spirit.

Thank you for accepting me as I am but not leaving me the same.

In Jesus' name, amen.
