When the disciples asked Jesus to teach them to pray, he gave them a prayer. Not a lecture on prayer. Not the doctrine of prayer. He gave them a quotable, repeatable, portable prayer (Luke 11:1-4).
Could you use the same? It seems to me that the prayers of the Bible can be distilled into one. The result is a simple, easy-to-remember, pocket-size prayer.
Once a day for 40 days I'll post a simple prayer that brings peace and rest.
Day 15
Therefore humble yourselves under the mighty hand of God, that He may exalt
you in due time, casting all your care upon Him, for He cares for you. ~1 Peter 5:6–7
Dear God, you are above all and worthy is your name.
I humbly come before you, confessing that I am a sinner. What I have done deserves justice and not grace, but I need to feel your grace today. I need your forgiveness. Would you replace the guilt, replace the shame I feel?
Be near to my friends and family who have secret shame they are afraid to reveal. May you give them a trusted friend and confidant and a sense of your forgiveness in their lives.
Thank you for taking our cares and burdens upon yourself. Thank you for promising to always care for each of us.
In Jesus’ name, amen.
