Lenten Devotional - Sunday, April 4 - EASTER

Sunday, April 4 - EASTER

“He said to them, ‘Do not be amazed! You seek Jesus of Nazareth, the crucified. He has been raised; He is not here. Behold, the place where they laid Him. But go and tell His disciples and Peter, He is going before you to Galilee; there you will see Him, as He told you.’” Mark 16:6-7

Key thought:
Alleluia, He is risen!

Suggested practice:
Rejoice! Give thanks and praise for His gift of eternal life. Happy Easter!

Praying Lent: Day 40

Day 40 - Change Your Life

If you confess with your mouth, "Jesus is Lord," and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved. Romans 10:9

Accept Jesus Christ as your Savior and let your life be changed. You will feel confident knowing you can handle anything life brings. Make your own sincere commitment now and feel the heavenly power of God's grace.

Strengthen Your Faith This Easter - Day 46 - Holy Saturday

DAY 46: HOLY SATURDAY

MEDITATE: Matthew 17:1-6, Lamentations 3:1-9, Lamentations 3:19-24
Click here to read today's meditation.

PRAY: Lord God,
On the Sabbath,
Jesus rested.
He was in the grave.
He had finished his work.
To most people’s eyes,
It looked as if it were all over.
He was dead and buried.
But only as a seed dies when it is planted in the earth,
Not to decay, but to spring to new life.
Teach us to take refuge in you when we are afraid
Teach us that death is not our end
Teach us to hope always in you
And in the resurrection, the making of all things
New.
Through Jesus Christ our Lord,
Amen.

Lenten Devotional - Saturday, April 3

Saturday, April 3

“We know that our old self was crucified with Him, so that our sinful body might be done away with, that we might no longer be in slavery to sin.” Romans 6:6

Key thought:
During this Lenten season, we have been diligently contemplating our human fallibility. Jesus, too, knows of our sinfulness, yet loves us so much that He was willing to die in order to free us from it forever. What a selfless gift!

Suggested practice:
Make some time to say this prayer today:

Agnus Dei #2
O my Lord Jesus Christ, the true Lamb who takest away the sins of the world; by Thy mercy, which is infinite, pardon my iniquities, and by Thy sacred Passion, preserve me this day from all sin and evil. I carry about me this holy Agnus Dei in Thy honour, as a preservative against my own weakness, and as an incentive to the practice of that meekness, humility, and innocence which Thou hast taught us. I offer myself up to Thee as an entire oblation, and in memory of that sacrifice of love which Thou didst offer for me on the Cross, and in satisfaction for my sins. Accept this oblation, I beseech Thee, O my God, and may it be acceptable to Thee in the odour of sweetness. Amen.

Praying Lent: Day 39

Day 39 - When Times Are Dark, Believe

Jesus said to him, “If you can believe, all things are possible to him who believes.” Mark 9:23

When you are downcast and discouraged, where do you turn? Rely on your own inner strength placed there by God Himself. What is this strength? The ability to believe. Believe God loves you and is present in every aspect of your life. Think positively and know in your heart all things are possible.

Lenten Devotional - Friday, April 2 – Good Friday

Friday, April 2 – Good Friday

“Therefore when Jesus had received the sour wine, He said, “It is finished!” And He bowed His head and gave up His spirit.” John 19:30

Key thought:
Jesus is aware that in order for the Scripture to be fulfilled, He must die—and He did so willingly.

Suggested practice:
Today, reflect on the many sacrifices that Jesus made for you; in giving His very life for your sins, He demonstrated the highest form of love.

Strengthen Your Faith This Easter - Day 45 - Good Friday

DAY 45: GOOD FRIDAY

MEDITATE: John 18:1-40, John 19:1-42, Isaiah 52:13-15, Isaiah 53:1-12, Hebrews 10:16-25, Psalm 22
Click here to read today's meditation.

PRAY: Lord God,
Jesus cried out to you on the cross,
“Why have you forsaken me?”
You seemed so far from his cry
And from his distress.
Those who stood at the foot of the cross
Wondered where you were,
As they saw Jesus mocked and shamed and killed.
Where were you then?
Lord God,
We, too, ask where you are,
When there is trouble and suffering and death,
And we cry out to you for help.
Be near to us, and save us
So that we may praise you for your deliverance.
Lord God,
We wait, on Friday, for the resurrection of Sunday
And sometimes our lives seem a succession of Fridays
And we cannot see what is “Good.”
Teach us to call your name
As Jesus did.
Make us to trust in you like little children.
In Jesus’ name,
Amen.

Strengthen Your Faith This Easter - Day 44 - Maundy Thursday

DAY 44: MAUNDY THURSDAY

MEDITATE: John 13:1-17, John 13:34-35
Click here to read today's meditation.

PRAY: Lord God,
You sent your Son into the world,
And before his hour had come,
He washed his disciples’ feet.
You had given all things into his hands.
He had come from you, and was going to you,
And what did he do?
He knelt down on the floor,
And washed his friends’ feet.
He was their teacher and their Lord,
Yet he washed their feet.
Lord God, help us learn from his example;
Help us to do as he has done for us.
The world will know we are his disciples
If we love one another.
Strengthen our hands and our wills for love
And for service.
Keep before our eyes the image of your Son,
Who, being God, became a Servant for our sake.
All glory be to him who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit,
One God, now and forever.
Amen.

Praying Lent: Day 38

Day 38 - God's Watchful Care

And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. Philippians 4:7

Commit your soul into the kindly care and keeping of the Lord. Find comfort in the fact that He watches over you. Affirm “God watches over me and all my loved ones. In His peace, I have peace.”

Is something worrying you? Release your cares to God.

Lenten Devotional - Thursday, April 1 – Maundy Thursday

Thursday, April 1 – Maundy Thursday

“You call me ‘Teacher’ and ‘Master,’ and rightly so, for indeed I am. If I, therefore, the Master and Teacher, have washed your feet, you ought to wash another’s feet.” John 13:13-14

Key thought:
Just as Mary Magdalene did earlier in the week, Jesus reminds us to place others before ourselves.

Suggested practice:
What can you do today to be of service to others?

Praying Lent: Day 37

Day 37 - Be Complete

The kingdom of God is within you. Luke 17:21

God has placed all the abilities you need in your spirit. Believe in yourself and the strength within you will be released. When you feel overwhelmed and weak, repeat these words, “God’s abundance and power are within me. I lack for nothing.”

Ask Jesus to fill you with His infinite strength.

Strengthen Your Faith This Easter - Day 43

DAY 43:

MEDITATE: Matthew 26:27-56, 1 Corinthians 1:18
Click here to read today's meditation.

PRAY: Lord God,
We tremble to think
That it was one of Jesus’ own friends who betrayed him.
One who sat by him, who broke bread with him.
Give us strength, we pray,
To walk faithfully with Jesus,
Even when the road we walk is rocky
Even when the message of the cross seems like foolishness
And even when we feel betrayed.
You, Lord, are always faithful.
We stumble, we become lost,
But you are steady and sure.
Give us the grace to endure our troubles,
And reveal to us the glory of your kingdom,
Through your son, Jesus Christ, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit.
Amen.

Lenten Devotional - Wednesday, March 31

Wednesday, March 31

“I gave My back to those who beat Me, My cheeks to those who plucked My beard; My face I did not shield from buffets and spitting. The Lord God is My help, therefore I am not disgraced; I have set My face like flint, knowing that I shall not be put to shame.” Isaiah 50:6-7

Key thought:
When you turn the other cheek, as Jesus so often did, you do not shame yourself; rather, in rejecting revenge, you demonstrate your love for others—regardless of their sins. What others may view as weakness, God sees as a virtue.

Suggested practice:
Whether it’s today, tomorrow or next week, someone is bound to hurt you. When that happens, resist the urge to lash out, and instead ask God to be by your side.

Praying Lent: Day 36

Day 36 - Practice Prayer Fellowship

For where two or three are gathered together in My name, I am there in the midst of them. Matthew 18:20

Lift your spirit with prayer fellowship. During this pandemic, you can reach out to others online and on the telephone—talk and pray with people who are seeking a deeper relationship with Jesus Christ. You will be aware that Jesus is in the midst of your group and your heart will be uplifted and encouraged.

Lenten Devotional - Tuesday, March 30

Tuesday, March 30

“Jesus replied, ‘Will you lay down your life for Me? Truly, truly I say to you, a rooster will not crow until you deny Me three times.’” John 13:38

Key thought:
Witnessing your faith in Christ isn’t always easy; in fact, sometimes it’s tempting to hide it, especially among those who don’t believe, or believe differently.

Suggested practice:
Pray for the courage of your conviction, so that you may live confidently in faith.

Strengthen Your Faith This Easter - Day 42

DAY 42:

MEDITATE: Matthew 26:36-46, Hebrews 5:7-9
Click here to read today's meditation.

PRAY: Lord God,
The message of the cross is difficult to take.
How can death give way to life? How can weakness be strength?
Yet your word says that Jesus, being God,
Took on human flesh
And suffered the worst kind of death.
How can this be?
This message is indeed difficult to take.
But your foolishness is wiser than our wisdom.
Your weakness is greater than our strength.
Help us to know that none of us can boast before you.
It is only in Christ Jesus that we can boast.
In his name, we ask you to help our unbelief.
That we may love you, and walk in the way Jesus taught us.
In his name,
Amen.

Praying Lent: Day 35

Day 35 - Seek His Will in Daily Prayer

Repent therefore and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out, so that times of refreshing may come from the presence of the Lord. Acts 3:19

When we surrender our lives to God and seek His will in daily prayer, we are spiritually changed. “Times of refreshing” come from the presence of the Lord. How clean, fresh and delightful life then becomes!

Lenten Devotional - Monday, March 29

Monday, March 29

“Mary…anointed the feet of Jesus and dried them with her hair…” John 12:3

Key thought:
Mary’s humble act of service foreshadows what Jesus Himself will later do during the Last Supper.

Suggested practice:
Perform your own humble act of service today.

Strengthen Your Faith This Easter - Day 41

DAY 41:

MEDITATE: Matthew 21:10-17, John 12:1-8
Click here to read today's meditation.

PRAY: Lord God,
Six days before his death, your son sat with Lazarus,
Whom he had raised from the dead,
And ate dinner with his friends.
Once again, your gospel tells us, Martha served,
And Mary knelt at Jesus’ feet
To anoint them with costly perfume.
The disciple who was about to betray him
Said that it was a waste.
He didn’t care about the poor, really –
He just wanted to fill his own pockets
And make Mary feel ashamed.
Lord God,
Often we cannot discern what is best:
When to pour out costly perfume for your sake,
Even if the world thinks it a waste.
When to be busy serving,
Or when to rest at your Son’s feet and learn.
Give us ears to hear you and eyes to see.
For the sake of your Son, Jesus Christ.
Amen.

Palm Sunday

God is at our side in every affliction, in every fear; no evil, no sin will ever have the final word. God triumphs, but the palm of victory passes through the wood of the cross. For the palm and the cross are inseparable. #PopeFrancis #PalmSunday

Lenten Devotional - Sunday, March 28 – Palm Sunday

Sunday, March 28 – Palm Sunday

“The Lord has given Me a well-trained tongue, that I might know how to speak to the weary...” Isaiah 50:4

Key thought:
Don Bosco, our founding father, knew how to speak to the weary—and he dedicated his life, in both word and deed, to the marginalized and exploited. What is God calling you to do?

Suggested practice:
Offer a soothing word to ease the worry or suffering of someone around you today.

PRAY: Lord God,
I give you thanks, for you are good, and your mercy is endless.
Here I stand, at the start of this holy week,
This week in which your church remembers Jesus’ passion and death,
And I am distracted by many things.
Turn my eyes now to the One who comes in your name
The one who opens the gates of righteousness
The one who answers when we call.
I bless you, Lord, for shining your light upon me,
And for sending your son to us, in human frailty.
To walk the road we walk.
Open my eyes that I may see him coming,
And may praise him with a pure heart.
And may walk in the way of his suffering,
And share also in his resurrection.
Through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God for ever and ever.
Amen.

Praying Lent: Day 33

Day 33 - You Are Not Alone

And He said, “My Presence will go with you, and I will give you rest.” Exodus 33:14

Sometimes God’s presence seems so real it’s almost tangible. Other times He seems far away and out of sight. The simple truth is this: God is here. Now. With us. Always. Jesus came to earth so that we’d never have to be lonely again, never be without a Helper. Today, embrace His presence. God is with us!

Praying Lent: Day 32

Day 32 - Master Your Doubts

Fight the good fight of faith, lay hold on eternal life. 1 Timothy 6:12

A challenging situation can sometimes lead to a crisis of faith. Doubt can confuse you and make you think that what you believe is an illusion. Stand up to your doubts; take authority over them. Refuse to listen to them and remember, no matter what you’re feeling, even in times of doubt, Jesus is in charge.

“And coming to her, he said, ‘Hail, favored one! The Lord is with you.’ But she was greatly troubled at what was said and pondered what sort of greeting this might be. Then the angel said to her, ‘Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God.’” Luke 1: 28-30

Key thought:
When the angel Gabriel appeared before Mary during the Annunciation, she did not understand God’s intention for her—but she had faith.

Suggested practice:
Today, let us express our gratitude to Mary for bringing Jesus into our midst. Offer a Hail Mary today, and ask for her strength during those times when you don’t know what God is asking of you.

The Hail Mary

Hail, Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee. Blessed art thou amongst women and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus. Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of our death. Amen

Key thought:
It’s much easier to find fault with or see deficiencies in others, than to recognize our own human weaknesses—which Jesus is always ready to forgive.

Suggested practice:

Among God’s many gifts is the gift of discernment—the ability to recognize the truth among so many false prophets. During His lifetime, many to whom Jesus spoke took Him for a heretic; but some immediately recognized His truth.

Suggested practice:
Who is Jesus? How can you cultivate your own discernment? Ask the Holy Spirit for guidance as you contemplate these questions.

Praying Lent: Day 27

Day 27 - Practice Thinking About God

You will keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on You. Isaiah 26:3

This passage advises you to keep your mind “stayed” or fixed on God and not on your troubles. Whenever a worry or problem comes, shift your thinking to God. This may be difficult at first, but practice will make it easier.

Strengthen Your Faith This Easter - Day 31

DAY 31:

MEDITATE: John 20:11-18 - But Mary was standing outside the tomb, weeping; so as she wept, she stooped to look into the tomb; and she saw two angels in white sitting, one at the head and one at the feet, where the body of Jesus had been lying. And they said to her, “Woman, why are you weeping?” She said to them, “Because they have taken away my Lord, and I do not know where they put Him.” When she had said this, she turned around and saw Jesus standing there, and yet she did not know that it was Jesus. Jesus said to her, “Woman, why are you weeping? Whom are you seeking?” Thinking that He was the gardener, she said to Him, “Sir, if you have carried Him away, tell me where you put Him, and I will take Him away.” Jesus said to her, “Mary!” She turned and said to Him in Hebrew, “Rabboni!” (which means, Teacher). Jesus said to her, “Stop clinging to Me, for I have not yet ascended to the Father; but go to My brothers and say to them, ‘I am ascending to My Father and your Father, and My God and your God.’” Mary Magdalene came and announced to the disciples, “I have seen the Lord,” and that He had said these things to her.

Suggested practice:
What does faith mean to you? How can you strengthen your belief in God's word and accept His blessings for you?

Praying Lent: Day 26

Day 26 - Surrender to God

But those who wait on the Lord shall renew their strength. They shall mount up with wings like eagles. They shall run and not be weary; they shall walk and not faint. Isaiah 40:31

This beautiful verse describes the greatest experience that can ever happen to you. It is called spiritual renewal. You get it by completely surrendering yourself to God. Practice this exercise daily and you will feel God's strength guiding you and giving you energy.

Strengthen Your Faith This Easter - Day 30

DAY 30:

MEDITATE: Luke 24:12 - Nevertheless, Peter got up and ran to the tomb; and when he stooped and looked in, he saw the linen wrappings only; and he went away to his home, marveling at what had happened.

PRAY: Jesus, I believe you are the one true Savior. I believe you conquered death to bring us into eternal life with you. In the times when I am tempted to doubt that you truly died and rose again, remind me of your truth.

REFLECT: What confirms for you that Christ is the Risen Lord?

Lenten Devotional - Thursday, March 18

Thursday, March 18

“…these works that the Father gave Me to accomplish, these works that I perform testify on My behalf that the Father has sent Me.” John 5:36

Key thought:
You do not need to perform miracles to demonstrate that you are one of God’s children. How you behave reflects your faith and your Christianity.

Suggested practice:
Make an extra effort today to be the person God intends you to be, and to love others openly with no expectations.

Praying Lent: Day 25

Day 25 - Move Mountains

"I tell you the truth, if anyone says to this mountain, 'Go, throw yourself into the sea,' and does not doubt in his heart but believes that what he says will happen, it will be done for him." Mark 11:23

Is a mountainous difficulty challenging you? Ask God to help you move the mountain right now. Let go of any doubts that “this mountain” will be removed. Believe God is moving it for you now.

Strengthen Your Faith This Easter - Day 29

DAY 29:

MEDITATE: Acts 4:33 - And with great power the apostles were giving testimony to the resurrection of the Lord Jesus, and abundant grace was upon them all.

PRAY: Jesus, I don’t want to forget about Easter once the calendar changes. Help me to keep the cross in mind daily -- it changes everything and I never want to forget the life-changing and beautiful impact of salvation in my life and in our world.

REFLECT: Brainstorm ways you can keep celebrating the spirit of Easter after Resurrection Sunday.

Lenten Devotional - Wednesday, March 17

Wednesday, March 17

“Amen, amen, I say to you, whoever hears My word and believes in the One who sent Me has eternal life and will not come to condemnation, but has passed from death to life.” John 5:24

Key thought:
We were baptized in faith, and as human beings, we occasionally need to refresh our beliefs. Remember: the rewards are great and eternal.

Suggested practice:
Ask Jesus for the tools you need to strengthen your faith, so that you may fully experience His power over death.

Praying Lent: Day 24

Day 24 - Scripture for a Good Day

This is the day which the Lord has made; we will rejoice and be glad in it. Psalm 118:24

When you wake up, say the above three times—only personalize it and say, "I will rejoice and be glad in it." Add something positive like, "When worry or fear enters my mind, I know that with God's help I can handle all problems that arise. I look forward to discovering the blessings that God has planned for me."

Strengthen Your Faith This Easter - Day 28

DAY 28:

MEDITATE: Micah 7:8 - Do not rejoice over me, enemy of mine. Though I fall I will rise; Though I live in darkness, the Lord is a light for me.

PRAY: Lord, in the dark seasons of my life, shine your light. When I am doubting, remind me of who you are. When I am weary, bring me peace. When I am restless, may I find my rest in you. You are the victory-- hallelujah!

REFLECT: How have you seen Christ meet you in your dark days?

Lenten Devotional - Tuesday, March 16

Tuesday, March 16

“Jesus said to him, ‘Rise, take up your mat, and walk.’ Immediately the man became well, took up his mat, and walked…” John 5:8-9

Key thought:
The Psalms tell us, “Come! Behold the deeds of the Lord, the astounding things He has wrought on Earth!” This week, we see how Jesus gave life to the dead and mobility to the paralyzed. These are astounding things, yet His miracles can also be subtle.

Suggested practice:
Think about what miracles you’ve encountered in your own life. If you can, come to the aid of someone who is ill or suffering to help ease their pain.

Praying Lent: Day 23

Day 23 - Depend on Christ

I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me. Philippians 4:13

If you feel depressed by situations, the above verse will remind you that you don't need to depend solely on your own strength. Christ is with you and is giving you all the help you need. Teach yourself to believe that through Christ's help you can do all things. As you make this affirmation, you will actually experience Christ's help. You will find yourself meeting problems with new force. Ask God to help you carry your heavy burdens with ease.

Strengthen Your Faith This Easter - Day 27

DAY 27:

MEDITATE: Romans 10:6-7 - But the righteousness based on faith speaks as follows: “Do not say in your heart, ‘Who will go up into heaven?’ (that is, to bring Christ down), or ‘Who will descend into the abyss?’ (that is, to bring Christ up from the dead).”

PRAY: Jesus, help me to not fear death, for I know that you have gone ahead and made a way for me into eternal life. I choose today to accept again your great gift of life eternal in heaven with you, and pray that you would give me confidence for every step of my journey until then.

REFLECT: What does the death and resurrection of Jesus mean for your own eternity?

Lenten Devotional - Monday, March 15

Monday, March 15

“Jesus said to him, ‘You may go; your son will live.’ The man believed what Jesus said to him and left.” John 4:50

Key thought:
It can be extremely difficult to trust what we cannot see; yet this is exactly what Jesus asks of us. Just as the man in this passage did, we are called to take His word on faith.

Suggested practice:
Say a special prayer to request God’s help in strengthening your faith, especially when visible signs of His presence are absent.

Prayer for Faith
Jesus, King of Kings, You say that the righteous man will live by faith. Mold me in Your image and fill my heart with faith in You. Guide my actions so that I can live by faith and have a life in You, abundantly and eternally. Cleanse my thoughts of impurities, dear God. Keep my eyes fixed on You and You alone. Help me be steadfast in my trust in You and Your Scriptures so that I can live right in Your holy sight. Amen.

Lenten Devotional - Sunday, March 14

Sunday, March 14

“…live as children of light, for light produces every kind of goodness and righteousness and truth.” Ephesians 5:8-9

Key thought:
It’s not always easy to 'live the light,' especially if you’ve had a bad day, or someone has been critical of you.

Suggested practice:
Instead of choosing the easy route today—meeting unkindness with unkindness, or lashing out—practice taking the high road. Ask yourself, 'What example do I wish to set for others today?'

DAY 26: SUNDAY - GRACE DAY

Saturday, March 13, 2021

Lenten Devotional - Saturday, March 13

Saturday, March 13

“…for everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, and the one who humbles himself will be exalted.” Luke 18:14

Key thought:
Humble gratitude is one of the straightest paths to true happiness.

Suggested practice:
Reflect on the many gifts that God has given you, and any advantages—however small—you have enjoyed in your life. Ask God for the ability to accept these things with humility, and to quietly share them with others with no fanfare or self-congratulation.

Strengthen Your Faith This Easter - Day 25

DAY 25:

MEDITATE: Psalm 110:1, Daniel 7:13 - Here is the Lord’s proclamation to my lord: “Sit down at my right hand until I make your enemies your footstool.” --- I was watching in the night visions, And with the clouds of the sky one like a son of man was approaching. He went up to the Ancient of Days and was escorted before him.

PRAY: Jesus, we pray that you would open our hearts and minds to understand more of the cultural and historical contexts of your life, your death, and your resurrection. Help us to gain greater understanding as we look at what it all meant for the world then and now.

REFLECT: Consider the ways Jesus was challenging the leaders of the time. Consider the political and social consequences of his claims, and consider how his death and resurrection changed the world forever.

Praying Lent: Day 22

Day 22 - Forgive

But I say to you, love your enemies, bless those who curse you, do good to those who hate you, and pray for those who spitefully use you and persecute you, that you may be sons of your Father in heaven. Matthew 5:44-45

Make a list of all the people who have hurt and mistreated you. Then pray for each by name and sincerely practice forgiving each one. Ask the Lord to bless them. Tell Him that you want to mean this. Speak kindly about these people to others. In time, this will break down many barriers, but even if it doesn’t, the healing you experience will be amazing. Look to your heart and ask God to help you forgive.

Praying Lent: Day 21

Day 21 - Satisfy Your Spirit

If anyone is thirsty, let him come to Me and drink. John 7:37

Sometimes, although we have everything we want and ought to be perfectly satisfied, vague dissatisfactions diminish our happiness. When you feel unhappy, try saying the verse above a few times. Try to imagine how Jesus looked when He said these words: the kindness, the understanding, the peace on his face. Picture yourself receiving the water of life that completely satisfies thirst so that you will never thirst again. Fill your heart with the satisfying grace of God's love.

Lenten Devotional - Friday, March 12

Friday, March 12

“The second is this: ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ There is no other commandment greater than these.” Mark 12:31

Key thought:
Of all of Jesus’ requests, empathy for others is the most important one to honor after loving God above all else.

Suggested practice:
Choose one small act of kindness and perform it for someone else today.

Strengthen Your Faith This Easter - Day 24

DAY 24:

MEDITATE: Mark 15:3 - Then the chief priests began to accuse him repeatedly.

PRAY: Jesus, you were scorned, beaten, mocked, and crucified for our sake. We cannot thank you enough for enduring such cruelty for the sake of our salvation. You are God’s one and only Son, the greatest sacrifice, our Savior and Redeemer. We praise you and thank you with all we are.

Praying Lent: Day 20

Day 20 - Draw from God's Love

In all these things we are more than conquerors through Him who loved us. Romans 8:37

No matter what happens, nothing can separate you from God’s love and protection. The secret is to build up your spirit, day by day, with the knowledge and realization of God’s presence and His love for you. Dwell on this until it becomes an unshakeable fact, the most important part of who you are. Is worry or fear blocking you from feeling God's love?

Lenten Devotional - Thursday, March 11

Thursday, March 11

“Whoever is not with Me is against Me, and whoever does not gather with Me scatters.” Luke 11:23

Key thought:
Jesus asks us to be 'all in' in our faith—to believe in Him unconditionally because He loves us so much.

Suggested practice:
Have there been times when you’ve paid lip service to your faith, but not exactly lived it in the way Jesus intended? Do you attend Mass and listen to the homily, yet take to heart only the lessons you like? Reflect on ways you can improve, and more fully welcome Him into your midst.

Strengthen Your Faith This Easter - Day 23

DAY 23:

MEDITATE: John 3:16 - For this is the way God loved the world: He gave his one and only Son, so that everyone who believes in him will not perish but have eternal life.

PRAY: Lord, you are true to your word. You have always been faithful and you will continue to be faithful. Thank you for fulfilling every promise you made. You are trustworthy and good.

Praying Lent: Day 19

Day 19 - Let Go of the Past

Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus. Philippians 3:13-14

Every night when you lie down to sleep, let go of everything that has happened. Release the day into the past. It is over, finished. Look confidently to the future with God. Ask God to fill you with His perfect peace.

Lenten Devotional - Wednesday, March 10

Wednesday, March 10

“Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets. I have come not to abolish but to fulfill.” Matthew 5:17

Key thought:
When Jesus arrived in this world, He brought with Him a new way to approach and live the Ten Commandments: with love. Love for ourselves, for our neighbors, for our enemies, and for God above all else. When love motivates all we do, fulfilling the Commandments becomes almost easy!

Suggested practice:
Resolve to move beyond your obligations to fulfill the letter of the Church’s Laws. How can you more fully live Jesus’ Law of love? Take a few moments to write out your thoughts, and refer back to them when you need a refresher.

Strengthen Your Faith This Easter - Day 22

Praying Lent: Day 18

Day 18 - Believe You Are a Child of God

Yet to all who received Him, to those who believed in His name, He gave the right to become children of God. John 1:12

Receive Christ; surrender to God's will and way. When you take this step, you enter a new manner of thinking. You begin a new life as a child of God. Continue to re-surrender yourself every day. As you do, you will feel spiritual power surging in. Need a boost of God's infinite love?  Share your burdens with Jesus.

Lenten Devotional - Tuesday, March 9

Tuesday, March 9

“…'Lord, if my brother sins against me, how often must I forgive him? As many as seven times?' Jesus answered, ‘I say to you, not seven times but seventy-seven times.’” Matthew 18:21-22

Key thought:
There is no limit to Jesus’ capacity to forgive. And, just as we ask for His mercy in our own lives, we must strive to offer our own forgiveness freely, even to those who repeatedly trespass against us.

Suggested practice:
Set aside some time to reflect upon forgiveness and how you can better practice it. Ask yourself, “What relationship(s) might be healed if I freely forgive?”

Strengthen Your Faith This Easter - Day 21

DAY 21:

MEDITATE: Acts 10:2 - He was a devout, God-fearing man, as was all his household; he did many acts of charity for the people and prayed to God regularly.

PRAY: Lord, I want to celebrate this season with my whole family. Show me ways we can draw near to you together this year in worship and adoration, as well as celebration and joy.

REFLECT: How can we celebrate this season as a family? How can I engage my family members in new ways this year?

Praying Lent: Day 17

Day 17 - Fill Your Mind with God

Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Romans 12:2

Try this prayer exercise. Close your eyes in a quiet place, take a deep breath and relax. Drain yourself of destructive thoughts, fear, every feeling of inferiority. Picture your mind completely empty. Then start filling it with thoughts of God, thoughts of every good and pleasant thing. Practice this new habit regularly twice every day, morning and evening. Ask God to help you change your life to a better one, where His love replaces your fear.

Lenten Devotional - Monday, March 8

Monday, March 8

“But He said, ‘Truly I say to you, no prophet is welcome in his hometown.’” Luke 4:24

Key thought:
Would you recognize Jesus if He lived in your midst? Do you always agree with those who preach His word, or accept their wisdom as His truth?

Suggested practice:
Today, resolve to respect those who act as God’s instruments and open your heart to whatever message they may send you.

Strengthen Your Faith This Easter - Day 20

DAY 20:

MEDITATE: John 20:17 - Jesus replied, “Do not touch me, for I have not yet ascended to my Father. Go to my brothers and tell them, ‘I am ascending to my Father and your Father, to my God and your God.’”

PRAY: Lord, help me to have a world view that is big enough to include all that the resurrection means, for me, for the church, and for mankind everywhere, for all time. Thank you that the resurrection is not just a personal reality, but a cosmic reality.

Lenten Devotional - Sunday, March 7

Sunday, March 7

“But whomever drinks the water I shall give shall never thirst; the water I shall give will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life.” John 4:14

Key thought:
So many people are thirsty: physically, emotionally and spiritually.

Suggested practice:
Pray that God will bless the thirsty with renewed faith, and quench their suffering with the knowledge of His love. At the same time, say a prayer of thanksgiving to Jesus, who willingly gave His life for us.

Prayer to Become More Like Jesus
God, our Father, You redeemed us and made us Your children in Christ. Through Him, You have saved us from death and given us Your divine life of grace. By becoming more like Jesus on earth, may I come to share His glory in Heaven. Give me the peace of Your kingdom, which this world does not give. By Your loving care protect the good You have given me. Open my eyes to the wonders of Your love that I may serve You with a willing heart. Amen.

Praying Lent: Day 16

Day 16 - Develop Spiritual Expectancy

My soul, wait silently for God alone, for my expectation is from Him. Psalm 62:5

Spiritual rest is not a passive state. It is filled with hope and anticipation. Develop and maintain a mental attitude of faith and expectancy–dreaming, believing, praying and working. Fill your mind with the positive power of spiritual expectation and God and good will flow toward you.

Lenten Devotional - Saturday, March 6

Saturday, March 6

“But now we must celebrate and rejoice, because your brother was dead and has come to life again; he was lost and has been found.” Luke 15:32

Key thought:
Despite his son’s imperfections and poor life choices, the father in this parable welcomed him back with open arms and celebration. Consider how this story reflects your own relationship with God, and how He is always willing to forgive and welcome us back into His home, if only we ask.

Suggested practice:
Do you know someone who has lost their way on their journey of faith? Perhaps you could invite that person to attend Sunday Mass with you in person or virtually. Offer your prayers for those who are far from the Father, that they may rediscover Him.

Strengthen Your Faith This Easter - Day 18

DAY 18:

MEDITATE: Colossians 1:27 - God wanted to make known to them the glorious riches of this mystery among the Gentiles, which is Christ in you, the hope of glory.

PRAY: Lord, I pray that focusing on contentment with who you designed me to be for forty days would help me to relish in the celebration of Jesus’ resurrection more. He died so that I could have a full an abundant life, not so that I could hide and cower. I pray that I realize more than I do now that Jesus is in the Father, I am in Christ, and Christ is in me.

Praying Lent: Day 15

Day 15 - Light Your Day with His Presence

Let the light of Your face shine upon us, O Lord. Psalm 4:6

Shine God's light on your life right now by making a mental list of times that you've experienced the grace of His watchful care. Recall moments when you were worried and anxious but despite your dark thoughts, things turned out fine. He took care of you.

Lenten Devotional - Friday, March 5

Friday, March 5

“…the stone that the builders rejected has become the cornerstone...” Matthew 21:42

Key thought:
We place so much emphasis on beauty and perfection in today’s world, demanding it both of people and of objects. This throwaway culture leads to feelings of unworthiness, inadequacy and depression, and contributes to the degradation of the beautiful world God created for us.

Suggested practice:
Jesus was once cast aside, yet rose in triumphant glory. How can you set aside your anxieties, and find peace in your own uniqueness? If you’re not sure, consider keeping a journal of affirmation.

Strengthen Your Faith This Easter - Day 17

DAY 17:

MEDITATE: Matthew 6:16 - When you fast, do not look sullen like the hypocrites, for they make their faces unattractive so that people will see them fasting. I tell you the truth, they have their reward!

PRAY: Lord, remind me of my frailty and continual need for grace. I rejoice that my appetite for sin has been forgiven and will one day be erased! I want to focus on you through all fasting in this season and beyond.

REFLECT: How can you give God glory in this season, whether you eat or fast?

Praying Lent: Day 14

Day 14 - Ask and It Will Be Given to You

Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you. Matthew 7:7

This verse tells us to ask and then immediately conceive of ourselves as receiving. For example, to be free from fear, ask the Lord to free you. Then believe that He has immediately done so. The minute you express your faith by sincerely asking Him for a blessing and believe that your prayer is answered, then your prayer is answered.

Lenten Devotional - Thursday, March 4

Thursday, March 4

“And lying at his door was a poor man named Lazarus, covered with sores, who would gladly have eaten his fill of the scraps that fell from the rich man’s table...” Luke 16:20-21

Key thought:
So many communities suffer from chronic hunger—and could be fed with the food we collectively waste every day.

Suggested practice:
If you can, make a monetary or in-kind donation to your community food pantry. At the same time, say a prayer of thanksgiving for what you have, and resolve to be more intentional about your own meal planning, preparation and consumption.

A Prayer for Gratitude

Dear God, Thank You for Your amazing power and work in our lives. Thank You for Your goodness and for Your blessings over us. Thank You that You are able to bring hope through even the toughest of times, strengthening us for Your purposes. Thank You for Your great love and care. Thank You for Your mercy and grace. Thank You that You are always with us and will never leave us. Thank You for Your incredible sacrifice so that we might have freedom and life. Forgive us for when we don't thank You enough, for who You are, for all that You do, for all that You've given. Help us to set our eyes and our hearts on You afresh. Renew our spirits, fill us with Your peace and joy. We love You and we need You, this day and every day. We give You praise and thanks, for You alone are worthy! In Jesus' Name, Amen.

Strengthen Your Faith This Easter - Day 16

DAY 16:

MEDITATE: Mark 7:7-9 - They worship me in vain, teaching as doctrine the commandments of men. Having no regard for the command of God, you hold fast to human tradition. He also said to them, “You neatly reject the commandment of God in order to set up your tradition."

PRAY: Lord, open my eyes to new ways that I can remove distractions from my life in order to see and know you better. Help me to be creative in the choices I make, as I seek to discover more of who you are without anything in the way.

REFLECT: What unusual ways could you consider to shake things up in your faith?

Lenten Devotional - Wednesday, March 3

Wednesday, March 3

“The Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life as ransom for many.” Matthew 20:28

Key thought:
God loves us so much that He made the ultimate sacrifice of His only Son.

Suggested practice:
What sacrifice can you make today, in recognition of that love? Do not view this sacrifice as something you’re giving up; rather, see it as giving something of yourself to someone in need. This could be as simple as lending a sympathetic ear, even if your schedule is busy.

Strengthen Your Faith This Easter - Day 15

DAY 15:

MEDITATE: 2 Corinthians 5:17 - Therefore if anyone is in Christ, this person is a new creation; the old things passed away; behold, new things have come.

Day 13 - Think About God

But seek first His kingdom and His righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. Matthew 6:33

Set aside a few minutes every day to practice thinking about God. Do not say anything during this time, just focus your mind on Him. This will make your mind spiritually receptive and will help deepen your prayer life.

Praying Lent: Day 12

Day 12 - God Is in the Details

Incline your ear, and come to Me. Hear, and your soul shall live. Isaiah 55:3

Today's message is a reminder to slow down. Take time to be still and look around you. Listen for what God is saying through your surroundings and experiences. Pay attention to the details. Ask God to guide you to see His amazing world today.

Lenten Devotional - Tuesday, March 2

Tuesday, March 2

“The greatest among you must be your servant.” Matthew 23:11

Key thought:
In the eyes of Jesus, we are truly at our greatest when we act in service to others.

Suggested practice:
Think about how you strive for greatness in your daily life. Whether you seek to excel at work, in school, or in an athletic endeavor, do you act in a way that also elevates those around you? How can you bring an element of service into achieving your goals?

Strengthen Your Faith This Easter - Day 14

DAY 14:

MEDITATE: Colossians 3:1-5 - Therefore, if you have been raised with Christ, keep seeking the things that are above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. Set your minds on the things that are above, not on the things that are on earth. For you have died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God. When Christ, who is our life, is revealed, then you also will be revealed with Him in glory. Therefore, treat the parts of your earthly body as dead to sexual immorality, impurity, passion, evil desire, and greed, which amounts to idolatry.

PRAY: Lord, help me to fight against my sin with your strength. I know that I have already been accepted in Christ, and that one day I will be fully conformed to your glorious image once and for all. Thank you that real change is possible today in you.

“Stop judging and you will not be judged. Stop condemning and you will not be condemned. Forgive and you will be forgiven.” Luke 6:37

Key thought:
There is little to be gained when we compare ourselves to others, but much to be gained when we recognize our common humanity.

Suggested practice:
Recognize any resentments you are holding close, and commit to letting them go. Ask God to help you forgive others from your heart.

Praying Lent: Day 11

Day 11 - Draw from God's Wisdom

You will guide me with Your counsel, and afterward receive me to glory. Psalm 73:24

Instead of struggling with challenges on your own, put every problem in God’s hands. Ask Him to give you the right answer, believe that He is doing just that, and take the guidance as it comes. Know that God is thinking and working along with you.

“You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall love your neighbor and hate your enemy.’ But I say to you, love your enemies, and pray for those who persecute you.” Matthew 5:43-44

Key thought:
Each of us is a child of God—and none of us is perfect. Still, God asks us to aspire to perfection by recognizing the fallibility of others, and not punishing them for it. By ‘being the bigger person,’ we honor His desires for us.

Suggested practice:
Offer your prayers today for anyone who may have misjudged, mistreated, misunderstood or even mocked you. Ask for God’s strength to turn the other cheek the next time it happens.

Strengthen Your Faith This Easter - Day 10

DAY 10:

MEDITATE: 2 Corinthians 12:9-10 - And He has said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for power is perfected in weakness.” Most gladly, therefore, I will rather boast about my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may dwell in me. Therefore I delight in weaknesses, in insults, in distresses, in persecutions, in difficulties, in behalf of Christ; for when I am weak, then I am strong.

PRAY: I’m sorry Jesus. I let you down. It was the least I could do to give up a menial thing like sweet treats and I failed. But, today I feel a renewed sense of grace that’s been missing from my heart for a while. Thank you, Lord...

REFLECT: How can I renew my commitment today to daily approach the throne of grace and humbly receive forgiveness, awareness, assurance, and words of encouragement and direction?

Lenten Devotional - Friday, February 26

Friday, February 26

“…go first and be reconciled with your brother, and then come and offer your gift.” Matthew 5:24

Key thought:
Asking for forgiveness can be just as difficult as offering it. But God doesn’t want us to shy away from the task.

Suggested practice:
Think back over the past several months, and recall something you may have done or said that hurt another person. Be honest with yourself. Then, as difficult as it might be, pick up the phone—or write a sincere note—to ask for their forgiveness.
